When the new 4R finally arrives there might not be any room on dealer lots for them

...because the new Tacomas and Tundras are stacking up like cordwood.

Oh my goodness. An area dealer near me has 30+ new of each in-stock. All of them advertised at around 3k off MSRP. I have little doubt one could walk in there and buy any one of them at dealer invoice right now.

 

I don't know anyone who would want to be a guinea pig for the two pickups right now, especially at the prices they are TSRP'ed at, a few k is not going to make a difference. I think at this time people are more comfortable buying Rangers than Tacos.

 

Sales don't seem to be that bad

Tundra up 26% YTD compared to last.

Tacoma down 26% but still leading the midsize class by more than double.

If I was Toyota, I'd be developing a compact truck STAT to compete with the Maverick.

The closest Toyota Stealership to me has a long line of Tacomas on the front row of the lot.

Since they share the same powertrain, I expect row 2 to be a long line of 4Runners.

I'm really eye-balling the Frontier with its naturally aspirated V-6....

 

Bad news for the 6th gen 4Runner folks it’s literally 100 percent identical to the 4th gen Tacoma only difference is the bed is covered. I’ve seen the 6th gen in person at overland expo west and can confirm the back seats have shrunk to Tacoma proportions

 

Longo Toyota has over 300 Tacomas and over 100 tundras in stock! Even the smaller Toyota stealerships by my house in SoCal have over 20 to 30 Tacomas

 

Compare a ‘24 Tacoma and a ‘24 4Runner and you’d assume they come from completely different companies. One being Toyota, the other a start-up car company, assembled in my garage using sand paper and duct tape….

Tacomas seem to be selling on past reputation & heavy discounts.

Fingers crossed, but despite sharing platforms, I still hold out hope that the made-in-Japan 4R will be significantly better built.

 

My Mexican assembled 2015 Tacoma has been rock solid 90k miles and litteraly not one rattle or squeak and it’s seem it’s share of heavy off road

my 2022 trd off road 4Runner had so many rattles (behind ac vent in dash and by sunroof on the headliner somewhere I had to dump it) my 2023 4Runner doesn’t rattle thank god yet but honestly my Tacoma feels more smooth and solid driving it. The plastics on my 4Runner scratch just looking at it and same for the paint my Tacoma has been abused and the interior plastics held up way better and same for the paint and I baby the shit out of my 4Runner all it’s seen is a dirt road

 

It’s the closest thing to the current 4Runner. The outside is “redesigned” from a couple years ago but because of cost cutting they did carry over a lot of that prior gen.

they did the same with the 400Z, still uses the door handles from an early 2000 350-370Z and other things like that.

 

Good argument to keep your Gen2.

I’ve owned three trucks built in Baja. Nice trucks, none of them were assembled correctly. I test drove a ‘24 Taco. It was worse. There’s a difference.

 

i did have a 3rd gen 2018 taco trd off road that I bought brand new and kept for 60k miles I babied that truck too (also built in Mexico) but that developed at rattle in the dash which is common in third gen tacos regardless if they were built in Mexico or Texas

 

I feel my '24 ORP is well made but there are three distinct rattles at 4k miles.

At least when I have a front passenger there are only two.

 

you passanger seat rattles it’s “normal” next time no one is riding shotgun if you place your hand on the back of your passanger seat or just looking at it you can see it shudder

Side note, Blackstone Toyota has a reputation for a bait-and-switch during contract signing. And still, nobody has gone to jail over it.

 

I think this is probably the real reason for the 6th gen delays.

 

That really sucks about the back seat space. Makes for a pretty useless SUV if you have kids.

Toyota guys generally love to bag on the Frontier, but I had one for a short time and I really enjoyed it. Decent power, great transmission, very comfortable. Tech in the base model is better and more useable and more customizable then anything the current 4R has.

I just can't own a pickup for my needs (I've tried a few times) but if they built an Xterra or a real Pathfinder with that power train and tech I'd probably buy it.

 

I think it would be a good move for Nissan bring back the Xterra right now. They are 95% there just make the frontier bed an interior space and call it good.

 

Same here. I’ve rented a Frontier twice for a week each time. One was an SV and the other a ProX. They were nicer than my second gen Tacoma, especially the ProX. If I get another midsize truck it’s at the top of the list.

 

I dropped off my wife's Silverado at the Chevy dealership for service yesterday and they had a new ZR2 Colorado on an outdoor display. It looked like a helluva lot of truck for a $48k sticker. I'm guessing $44k would have taken it home all day long.

 

I think that Toyota is pricing themselves out of the market. Their new vehicles aren’t as great as they think they are.

 

Turd, My 24 4runner is rock solid, except for the thin paint. I've owned a 86 FJ60, 88 4runner, 90 4runner, 08 Taco. My 24 4runner is the best of the bunch, bar none. Not sure how you reference the difference between "Mexican" Toyotas and those made in Japan. The kentucky plant is the largest in the world. Their standards far exceed those of American Manufacturers.

 

I don't want to jinx myself here with my new '24 ORP...... but it is my 10th new Toyota in the last 25 years and i've never done anything other than routine maintenance on any of them. The only real quality-related complaint I could come up with over the years is the very short lifespan of the undersized brakes on my Tundras. I think my Tundras were made in Indiana and Texas.... and I'm pretty sure that my Tacomas were all made in California.... but I could be wrong.

 

There used to be a plant in Fremont, CA called Nuumi. Tesla has the plant now.

 

I’m talking about the new designs. The 24 4Runner is a 15 year old design. The fourth gen Tacoma, third gen Tundra, new Land Cruiser, new Sequoia are what I’m referring to. They have way too many problems and are way too overpriced. The 6th gen 4Runner looks to be the same unless they are putting it on hold to work out all these issues.

 

Toyota having difficulty selling these trucks is a good thing. The lesson I hope Toyota learns is less gimmicks and less complications in the drive train. Also, the number of people who need a truck but wish they had a Prius is approaching zero.

Simple, reliable, reasonably prices is what Toyota drivers want. Gimmicks and hybrids are not on that list.

They can still release 6th Gen 4Runner with 1GR-FE updated with D-4S and a new transmission.
