1st maintenance - no oil change?

I just called my dealership to book for the 1st maintenance (8,000 km or 5,000 miles) for my 2024 4runner.

The dealership tells me that the 1st maintenance does not include an oil change and that 1st oil change is recommended at 16,000 km (10,000 miles) or 1 year whichever comes first.

First I thought they were trying to be cheap since 1st service was complimentary but Toyota Canada website says the same thing - no oil change for service #1

    Service #1
    • Check installation of driver's floor mat.
    • Inspect all lights and horn for proper operation.
    • Inspect wiper blades, linkage and washers for proper operation. 1
    • Check and record tire tread depth. Examine tires for damage and uneven wear.
    • Remove wheels & visually inspect brake pads, calipers, rotors, brake lines and hoses.
    • Rotate tires (applicable to same size wheels, front & rear).
    • Remove & inspect cabin air filter. 2
    • Remove & inspect engine air filter. 3
    • Inspect for leaks where applicable - engine oil, brake fluid, engine coolant, intercooler coolant, inverter coolant, power steering fluid, transmission/transaxle fluid, differential fluid, transfer case fluid, and top up windshield washer fluid.
    • Visually inspect the Hybrid Battery Cooling Intake Filter (if equipped) & clean if required.4
    • Record inspection results, measurements and component condition on inspection form and/or repair order.
    • Reset Maintenance Reminder Light or system.

I'm a little surprised an oil change is not needed at 8000 km.... is this okay?

It is what the book says.
But better judgment dictates that you get your new car oil changed out of your own pocket at around 1000-1500 miles to remove all the new engine wear. There on, pick you 5k/10k interval .

I disagree. With the first oil change I would definitely do within the first 3-5k miles. I don't care what Toyota says. After the first one do whatever you want..... But the first one is the one to pay attention to on all internal combustion engines.

You have a filter that filters the oil. Any wear in shavings are trapped in it and many more owners have gone to 10K miles on their first change without issues. I choose 5K oil changes for my personal vehicles. They last a long time. 150K on my supercharged Tacoma until it was totaled. 140K on my Ranger 4.0 before I traded in.

The funny part is, as soon as the “free” services over, dealerships start to recommend 5k oil changes.

Advocate for yourself. If you want an oil change at 5000 miles/8000 km, make them do it. Will they charge you for it? Probably. But I'm also of the opinion that the first oil change should not go 10000 miles. It's your car, your money. Do as YOU see fit.

How long do you intend to keep the 4Runner? If it's 5 years or less, it's OK...

I made them do an oil change, and paid the extra for it. Worth it for my peace of mind.

I personally follow the maintenance manual for the 4Runner. My first oil change was at just over 1000miles and there after every 5000miles.

Per the 4runners service manual if you have meet any of this conditions you should change oil at 5000miles or love your 4Runner you shall change oil at 5000miles. I simply say "I will pay out of pocket for the oil change" and dealership had no issues doing it.

    Normal.

It’s hilarious to me that people stress over the first 1000-5000 miles, all the while hardly anyone’s ever even seen the inside of a 1GR because they run for eternity regardless.

If you want to exchange time & money for peace of mind, go right ahead, but as long as you follow the factory recommended service intervals, it’s more likely you’d be abducted by a UFO than your 4.0 stranding you over the next 20 years. Good luck.

This is going to be fun to watch.

    Do what makes you happy.

People on here will tell you 5k and others will say 10k.

I do know a few things and
    1. is that nobody on here is ever going to cover you if anything bad was to happen especially by the people that have a sample size of 1 and claim they have no issues.
    2. Each tech and engineer I have talked to say do the 5k not 10k. They seem to have more experience than some random person in this forum.
    3. Toyota is just like all other manufacturers and the engine only needs to not have an issue until the warranty is up.
    4. Some users that are against 5k changes on here will claim the techs are wrong and any tech on the internet is just doing it for the clicks and money.
    5. I have seen people with no issue with high millage with 10k intervals and I have seen low mileage engines with issues that have 10k intervals.
    6. My info is limited but I have not seen anyone with 5k intervals have oil issues.

Yeah that's probably true but there are people (i'm one of them) who look at Carfax and maintenance records when I buy a used vehicle and I'd be much more likely to buy a vehicle that had it's first oil change at 1k miles than one that had it at 10k miles.

When I had the "free" services I just went with what the manual and dealership recommended (10k oil, 5k rotations). I'm 95% on pavement/highway and never pull anything so those intervals have been fine. Had my last free service done last week (25k miles) and went ahead and paid for the oil change also. From now on, since I'll be rotating the tires at 5k and paying for everything anyway, I'm going to do the oil at the same time

I change every 10k with whatever brand of synthetic that is on sale. Your engine will outlast your ownership

Same. I had to bicker with the dealer to use my first free oil change at 5k. They wanted to wait until 10k.

My buddy bought a 2024 and his dealer reached out for the first oil change at 5k. Dealers choice I guess.

Just curios why didn't follow the manual recommended 5000miles oil change and few other items needed for the 5% of off pavement driving?

Lots of wear material in the engine. Go to 3:59 for the main point.

The other 5% of my driving is on pretty well maintained fire roads/trails like in my profile pic that are only a couple miles long, so it's nothing extreme. If there wasn't a maintenance package that came with it new I would've stayed with 5k oil change/rotation since that's what I've done on all my other vehicles. Since I'm easy on this one, I figured the first 20k miles with 2 changes isn't going to hurt anything and so far, everything checks out.

Split the difference and do oil changes at 7500 miles.
The 5th gen has been around for 15 years now. Don’t worry too much about it. I don’t recall ever seeing an internet thread about engine failures. If it was happening we definitely would hear about it. Look at the new Tundras for example.

If you want your engine to last, it is very important to get initial oil out early. This is because it has A LOT of metal in it. Get your oil changed ASAP.

Here is initial oil analysis, that I done at less than 1K. You have been pushing all that metal through you engine for a while now.

Multiple people repeatedly showed you with oil analysis that filter DOES NOT remove all metal particles. Why you do you knowingly keep repeating this falsehood? Here is one more time oil analysis that shows you that you are WRONG.

Never done one early oil change..... probably going on 800k total miles in vehicles with zero issues. Never will do any, your engine will outlast ownership if you never do one early oil change. BOOK IT DANNO
