I’m been puzzled for sometime now. Every 4 Runner I see has the exhaust tip coming out the passenger rear . I have a 2021 SR5 Premium and comes out the passenger side, right next to the mud flap. Anyone know why mine is different or does anything have it come out the side as I do. It’s so strange. I’ve never seen one with the side exhaust. Thanks Friends.

It's very possible the previous owner modded it.

Is it loud with a black tip? That would be the TRD exhaust.

They're out there. I followed the writeup by @Saker and bought a 90° stainless elbow, a black stainless Toyota exhaust tip, cut the oem tail section and modified mine:

I turned mine out to the side because I didn't like it blowing hot exhaust and condensation on to my legs.

I had a muffler shop do a side exit to stop exhaust fumes from entering when the rear window is down. Opted for a dual tip as I wanted to be special!

Some non TRD Pro 4Runners get TRD Pro exhaust as an option.

Here's an window sticker from TRD Offroad where it has optional TRD Pro exhaust.

Oh maybe but it has a TRD tip , it doesn’t sound louder to me. I believe it was a rental prior to me. Is there any other way to tell the difference between a TRD and regular exhaust?

Some of us had to enhance the exhaust out of necessity. I smashed it closed. Had to get the sawzall.

The flange that connects the tail section is different between the two types, but I don't remember which is which.

The joint coming from the muffler has 3 bolts on YRD Pro exhaust vs 2 bolts on regular exhaust.

I’ll have to check underneath and see thanks. I do know the TRD tip is welded on it’s definitely not just bolted..

Do you not like the side exhaust exit? You mentioned it doesn't sound loud to you, so I'm just wondering if it matters if you have a TRD exhaust or not...

No it doesn’t matter to me , it doesn’t seem any louder. I just noticed that I guess the heat that comes from the tail pipe has discolored the mudflap.

If it isn't loud then someone simply swapped the tailpipe. Of course it had to be modded because of the different flanges.

That’s definitely been modded. That’s a little too close to the flap for comfort.

Really don’t know if it was modded it was bought my local Toyota dealership they received it from there Lexus dealership it was used as a loaner car. It doesn’t really matter to me and not about to spend money to fix it.

Nothing to fix there except maybe to closeness of the mudflap
