The "Car Care Nut" lived and worked in the Chicago area. That is the definition of severe duty.

I think we can agree that use cases vary and owners should just take their best shot at it.

Not that our vehicle is the best choice for either of these but a taxi? Let’s say 5k or less depending on idling. Medical courier zipping state to state? They can absolutely change at 10k.

Environmental conditions vary, yes Hyundai/Kia’s “severe” service criteria sure sound pretty normal but that’s par for the course for those companies but honestly it’s pretty standard. Side note: H/K engines are the only ones I’d recommend 3-4k intervals for.

If someone wades through this mess and thinks ____ is for them, they’ll be fine.

Could y’all imagine if we had to vote as a nation for a definitive oil change interval?

The Mobile marketing team is thrilled with you! You’re living proof that their work makes a difference. :D Do you think the oil you got from Walmart has anything in common with F1 oil, besides both being slippery?

Do you know how to use the search button here on google? You could have found all the previous 341,982 oil threads.

Careful using that term! You might upset someone!

I agree, though. There's a reason the manual recommends different intervals, and even viscosity, for different conditions.

I changed mine after 500 miles, then at 2000, after that at 5000, and from then on every 5-6 K miles. Bought brand new, 2023. I have used amsoil thus far, but switching to redline. Same with oil filters. Good brands. You pay what you get for. I am intending to keep this rig for as long as I can. The rest of the maintenance items, I just follow the manual.

I’m going to have to ask a similar question again.
Has anyone heard of a 4Runner engine failing because the didn’t use expensive oil and filters?
Just use any normal brand synthetic oil like Valvoline and a $5 Toyota filter. Stop wasting your money on unnecessary crap.

I think it would be really great if we organized a nationwide simultaneous 4Runner oil changing. Maybe at the solstices. Or when the clocks change. We could synchronize at 20:00 GMT. That way everyone in the US is in daylight.Think of it. The camaraderie! The bonding! And no more bickering amongst ourselves regarding when to change the oil.

Each to their own preference. I've owned four new 4Runners and one new Tundra, and changed the oil (Mobile 1 5W/30) and filter (OEM) at around 1000 kilometers on each.

I think he meant 10,000km. That’s the European standard but since he had 4Runner he’s probably Canadian.

Since this is an election year, is it too late to get a bill that bans future oil change interval threads on the ballot, in all 50 states?

After that, maybe we can all focus on a topic that’s much more productive, like octane recommendations…

Obviously Premium. What kind of cheap SOB uses regular? You must really not care about your vehicle if you don't use Premium. And, gas from anywhere besides my preferred station is garbage!

    Why?

Obviously people like to discuss it. Your post proves it. If you really hated it you would not post and move on without looking at it.

Because there is nothing to discuss. No one is bringing anything new to the table. Everything that could be said has already been said on the topic.
Repetition reduces the content quality of a forum.

    An oldie but a goldie:

The Ever Expanding List of Perpetual 4Runner Controversies
    (in no particular order)

    Is KDSS better?
Oil change at 5k or 10k miles?
Toyota brand? Mobil 1? Amsoil? Redline? Blah blah…
    0W20? 5W20? 5W30?
Replace plastic oil filter housing with metal?
    Will it rub:
    – with a fender nip and tuck?
    – if I delete the mud flaps?
    – if I upgrade the upper control arms?
    – with a body mount chop?
Do these huge tires require a re-gear?
    Ladder? Yes or no?
    Bull bar? Yes or no?
    Light bar? Yes or no?
    Raptor lights? Yes or no?
TRD Pro “Heritage” grille? Yes or no?
    C load or E load?
    Call it AWD or 4WD?
Call it an SUV or a truck?
    What qualifies as a mod?
    What qualifies as a build?
Part-time 4WD okay to use on dry pavement?
Ditch your Pedal Commander for a Dry Flow filter?
Can I retrofit a heated steering wheel?

I'm pretty sure the forum could find software that could automatically delete any new thread attempts if the title has the word oil in it.
