Oil changes

I have a new 2024 SR5. 1500 miles so far. I’ve seen talk of doing an oil change after 1000 mile to remove any metal shavings from the new motor. Does anyone have thoughts on that? Also, I’ll be doing oil changes every 5000 mile vice 10,000 as Toyota says. Any thoughts on that?

There are extra shavings in the engine from whatever break in is left but you have a filter that doesn't let them circulate. Many go 10K miles like this without issues and the engines last for a long, long time. What you do is up to you but remember that we bought Toyotas for their durability. They're not fragile although some will bring up the new Tundra 3.4TT engine but those are shavings from machining, not break in.

Also yeah yet another oil fight thread. Not sure why people can't just make up their own mind.

 

I follow the manual, but I think it won't hurt to change oil sooner especially if mechanics do it right. And here is professional opinion:

I changed oil and filter at 1500 miles.
Probably not wholly necessary, but relatively inexpensive peace of mind. It's a DIY job if you're somewhat mechanically inclined.

5,000. I don’t care what people say on this site. I use OEM filter and Penzoil Ultra Platinum. People will say 10k. I’ve seen a Toyota engine torn down after 10k mile intervals. I’ll do it at 5,000

 

And this is for Saturday. “What’s the best brand of oil to use ?”

 

Sure, sure, ya gotta have that super duper best there is oil, but what about filters?

I change mine before I start up my 4Runner every time. Better safe than sorry...

 

I did my first with nearly 777 on the dash… going to do my next at 5000 and then every 5000 after that…

I did find metal shavings in the filter and it would have most likely been fine until the 1st oil change, but I feel better with them out of the truck.

sticking with oem Toyota oil and oem Toyota filters… no Toyota care oil changes and I’m doing them all myself

Currently have 3066 on the dash

 

Did the first change ~600 miles. 2nd at~ 3100 miles. I’ll likely do it at 5k from here on. OEM or wix filters, mobile 1 synthetic. My science behind mobile one is simple: if it’s good enough for a Formula 1 engine, it’s good enough for me.
Ultimately follow the manual or do whatever you think is best. Your rig, not mine, and not my place to tell you what to do with it….

 

OP, think about your intentions for the vehicle and just do what makes you sleep better at night. You’ll be fine.

Never done it never will I do 10k oci with synthetic and have over 230k trouble free miles. Brand of oil doesn't matter either

 

If it were mine, I would do the first change soon. Then, I would change it every 3500-4500. Oil is still cheap insurance. I also idle my engine a lot because of the dogs, so I change the oil more often.

 

Purchased a 2024 ORP in mid-September and drove it 1000 miles home. At 1200 miles did the 1st oil change. Don’t know if it was necessary but since the 5th gen is done - I want it to last a long time…

 

You know, manual also says the tabk capacity is 24 gal, but it is not wise to run it dry every time. I fill up once half-empty. Because what if I run it down to 10%(not to say to empty) and there isn't a gas station around? That is my take. I try to do 5000, more or less, and not to push it to 10000 every time. At the very least shooting for 5k adds a safety margin likewise. And I also did my first change at 1500 miles and had the oil tested, very high levels of wear metals. Now, I am not an expert and cant comment on if that is ba md for the engine, but those did go down after successive 5000 oil changes, so I fogure if an oil change is a good thing for the engine, and it also causes the wear metals to go down, then high wear metals probably bad? Anyways each to their own, this is how I think about and go about doing oil changes. Oh and I do them myself, as one of my skid bolts already came conveniently pre-cross-threaded feom the dealer.

And, 5K is WAY too long! The manuals are obviously written by the marketing team. The proper interval is 1200 miles

 

You’re right by golly. Who knows? In 5000 miles of driving you may not be able to lay your hands on 7 quarts of 0W20 synthetic!

I get the idea of not running it empty. But, with the amount of information that's available these days, it's pretty easy to figure out if there is a gas station around.

Not against either, honestly.

But, I think 10K is fine for a lot of drivers, just like it was for me when my previous 4Runner was used 99% on the highway.

I actually do 5K intervals on my current 4Runner because the manual says so.

Mods really do need to step in when a new oil interval thread shows up.
There is plethora of information on the topic available on the forum and enough reasoning by proponents that favor 5k or 10k.
Maybe a thread can be made sticky for ease of access.
But another oil thread is flogging a dead horse.

 

I’m indifferent to other folks’ oil change intervals. But I disagree with your reasoning. First you say that you fill up with gas at half a tank because if you run the tank down to 10% you might run out before you can find fuel. Then you bring up the halved oil change interval, inferring that you won’t be able to find the oil when you need it. Sorry, but this is goofy on many levels.

 

Some of you guys worry too much. When’s the last time your engine seized due to old oil or your fuel pump burned out because you run your tank to empty?

 

I wouldn't know. I fill up at 3/4 tank.

Oh I am actually reffering to when life gets busy and you just dont get a chance to do the change at the interval. I do maintain my 4 runner and my wife's car, have a full time job and other hobbies. I also dont have a garage or anything like that to do my changes so I have to deive 20 mins to a shop where I rent a bay. Sometimes it is too much, I had been meaning to grease the propshaft and change diff fluids at 15k, but at 17k atm haven't had the time to do it.
