4Runner Limited

So we are looking to trade in our Highlander for a 4Runner. We need 4WD and a 3rd row. Can the Limited 4WD handle beach sand. They allow beach driving where we are so we need something that can handle that. Our Highlander AWD cannot handle it since the sand can get soft and deep.

 

It can handle sand but you you have to use common sense.

do you plan on hauling anything in the back when using the third row? If so you won’t have much room.

 

The Limited is just as capable on sand I would imagine as any of the other models. You can also get 4wd & 3rd row on an SR5 Premium.

 

I would expect that 4Runner can handle sand better than Highlander especially is tires are good for sand but sand driving mostly depends on driver. For soft and deep sand you might need a sand buggy : )

 

It can get deep in areas, especially after some jeep owner decides to do donuts and leave deep ruts. But it’s mostly just soft sand.

 

This is really going to depend on your tire choice and inflation. The stock 245/60 R20 inflated to normal pressure aren't going to do you any favors in sand. In fact, plan on getting stuck. You want something with a wider footprint, bigger sidewall, and capable of being aired down. Which subsequently means you should consider purchasing a whole new set of wheels and tires if this is how your Limited is currently equipped.

 

Not sure about the sand aspect. We have the highlander and 4Runner both with 3rd rows. Just a warning - the highlander 3rd row is useful, the 4Runner 3rd row is substantially less useful. If a child is small enough to fit in the 4R 3rd row, good luck trying to get them in and out.

 

This…. 4Runner 3rd row is for those that are just happy to not have to walk. Also the storage is next to nothing when the 3rd row is in use

 

If you air down and turn off traction control, the Highlander may surprise you. (EDIT: Especially if combined with the center lock button if you have a gas model with it.)

But of course other issues still apply like ground clearance, angles.

The 4Runner will most likely be fine, but you’ll still want to air down.
