Thanks for the photo and info. The headroom does look excellent.

I appreciate it. I learned long ago from tent shopping that cubic feet (or cc's) often don't tell the whole story when it comes to livable space. There will always be sloped angles, an object or trim piece protruding out, etc. that can really impact interior livability. My favorite example of this is two Hilleberg tents I've owned, the Tarra and Saivo. The Tarra is a 2 person tent with 30 square feet interior and the Saivo is a 3 person tent with 40 square feet. The Tarra is hands down a WAY roomier tent inside, due to the walls and doors being nearly vertical, as opposed to the Saivo's "massive" floor space which has very sloped walls and little actual living space.

Just looked it up - maybe the grenadier makes more power, but that apparently doesn’t translate into acceleration. It’s a full two seconds slower to 60mph than the 4R, 9.6 seconds vs 7.5. Must be the weight. That also shows up in the 15mpg EPA estimates.

I am at high elevation.. the grenadier’s turbo charged engine and transmission is much snappier than the 4R.

yep much worse MPG and requires premium fuel.. ah well.

The turbo makes up for the thinner air. It’s also an 8 speed so lower ratios down low. I’d compare it to the GX550, not the Runner.

Yeah 550 not doing it for me. Nothing exciting about it.. didn’t even drop into the local Lexus dealer. However I am sure it is snappier than the grenadier..

The GX is kinda meh for sure. I do prefer the styling of the Ineos.

The only time I've put like 25k miles per year on a car is with a lot of highway commuting. So, I gotta ask, why are you doing that much highway driving in a 4R? Seems like you must own stock in Chevron or something. :p

While we don't know what the 6th gen prices are officially yet, we can extrapolate from the Tacoma. A TRD Pro or Trailhunter 4R will be super pricey, at which point, buying a low-mileage 100 series LC and building it properly, or just buying a Grenadier makes a lot of sense as alternatives.

Personally, the Grenadier is the closest thing we can get to the 70 series LC. If you don't really care about the 70 series, then, you're probably not the Grenadier market. I owned a Defender 110, wouldn't ever get one again, makes Jeep look like it's built like a 5th gen.

^Low mileage 100-series LC? Even the newest one would be 17 years old.

Your comment made me think about my own mileage; I've had my current 4Runner for 2 years and have 46k miles on it, which is by far the least number of miles I've ever put on a vehicle in the same amount of time, and it's only because I'm retired and can walk everywhere in town, so it basically just sits (often for 2 weeks at a time without being started up). My 2002 4Runner had 250k miles when I sold it, my 2009 Taco had 275k when I gave it to my daughter (she still drives it), my 2017 Taco had 90k when I traded it for my 4Runner, and during this same time period I owned 9 different BMW motorcycles, which each had between 8 and 30K miles when I sold them (usually at around 25k). For the majority of that time, I had a take-home car, so my commuting did not get put on my POV's. One of the two motorcycles I totaled had 11k miles on it and I'd owned it for 3 months. Bottom line, I think some folks just drive more than others.

40 miles each way to work. Plus other trips.

    Why not in a 4R?

Do whatever you want, nobody's saying not to. Just commenting on how much it costs in gas to commute in a 4R. I mean, I take mine on long trips, and while I like driving 80mph through Wyoming, yeesh that drinks gas fast.

Low mileage is 100k. Everyone has a different idea about whether that's good or bad on a Land Cruiser. We just sold my father's 19990 Lexus LX-470 (same as the 100). Around 450k miles, on the east coast with salty winters. My dad did a good job keeping the underside clean, there was surface rust, but nothing major. Driver's seat was worn pretty hard, but, other than that, it was fully functional, and only ever needed maintenance parts the entire time he owned it. The guy that bought it will probably drive it another 50k miles and then who knows.

So, my take on age with a Land Cruiser is about miles and how it is maintained, more than the years. The mileage though, even for an LC, takes its toll past 400k miles.

It’s silly to think, but the Safari windows on the grenadier is one of the major features that sold me. It’s positioned at 10 o’ clock realtive to the driver’s head (compared to normal sunroof at 12 o’ clock)

The Safari window is very much in driver’s peripheral view. Trees stream by from windshield up to the safari window, creating an enjoyable expansive view during drive.

People have posted what they like better about the Grenadier than the 4R.
But, what can the Grenadier do off road that an ORP can't?

Yeah, I drove a little Scion xA for years averaging 37mpg. Continued driving it for awhile after getting the 4R, then switched. I’m only getting older, and am enjoying the 4R. And I’m in a situation right now where a breakdown on my 230k-mile xA would be more than an inconvenience.

I wonder if anyone has done a legitimate off-road comparison of the two.

Yeah it wasn’t about absolute capabilities for me.. having a unique vehicle on the road was worth the cost of entry for me. As I mentioned earlier, Grenadier has nothing equivalent to ATRAC. If I wanted the ultimate off road capabilities I would have picked up a wrangler rubicon.

I am sure driving techniques normalizes the off road capabilities of either platforms.

I've looked hard at the Grenadier as replacement for my '13 Trail, which I finally have set up exactly how I want it. Can't quite pull the trigger on the Grenadier but I really, really like it. The biggest issue for me is interior space. I sleep in my 4Runner, and have ~75" of comfortable length (rear seat delete, etc). The Grenadier is tall and boxy, which is great, but the tailgate to front center console length is ~65". If you do something like a Goose Gear plate and seat delete, you can push the manual passenger seat forward, and add a hanging plate extension to get ~72" length. But there is clearly less interior space vs a 4Runner.

The other issue IMO is their dual battery system design. The second battery (under the rear seat in some trims) is designed to top-off the starter battery, and all aux systems run off the starter battery. There seems to be no protection for the starter battery. That seems very odd, especially if you plan to stay in one location a few days. Both batteries are lead. Adding a Lithium 3rd battery is certainly possible, but becomes a space issue again. Some people have removed the factory buss wiring, and redesigned Aux systems to run only from the second battery, or from a third, Li battery.

My only other minor concerns are the somewhat buggy electronics (including a speeding noisemaker you have to manually turn off each drive), lack of lumbar adjustment, and no traffic-following cruise control/360 camera/etc. I understand the back-to-basic goals of the design, but if I sell my old 4R, I'd love some basic stuff like a modern cruise control.

The vehicle is built like a tank, and looks like it is a fantastic build quality. I have a dealer with a lot full of Grenadiers 5 miles from my house, so I struggle with that daily. But...I also worry about that dealer not having sufficient sales volume to stay open. The next closest dealer is 400 miles away - not very convenient. The factory is currently closed, supposedly because their seat supplier, Recaro, is going out of business.

All of the components are more robust, solid front axle, it's a better tractor.

Those are all legit risks. Mine doesn’t have the factory aux battery, only the factory, wiring for external power.

That being said.. it was not an objective decision… the 4r performs fine.. and I can get it to perform better with additional upgrades that will still come out much less $ than the IG. (I paid $37k on top of my trade-in, new-ish ORP, to get into the IG) The IG was largely an emotional decision.

IG’s aftermarket mods command a tremendous premium over 4R. The rule of supply and demand is robust.

shopping for rock sliders right now.. about to pay $2200 for a set.. 2x the cost of my 4R sliders. Need to get weather mats because mine didn’t come with it… $250 set from weather tech :bananadead:

Ahh but this view is worth it! Or is it… o_O
