Chingling Sound in my Brand New 2024 4 runner ORP.... PLease Help!

I recently bought a brand new 2024 4runner ORP. After driving it a week or so, I noticed a noise that has now turned into a nuisance. It begins to be audible only after achieving speeds of 40mph or higher, and sustains with varying degrees of volume until the vehicle drops back below 40mph, and then the noise cannot be heard at all. The noise itself is difficult to target and describe. It seems to be coming from the front part of the cabin, not sure if it originates from outside or inside. It becomes a real nuisance on extended freeway trips, where it earworms me. It seems to stay audible, even above normal stereo volume, and with the radio off widows up, It really becomes annoying. It does not resemble whistling or wind noise , but rather a higher pitched chimy/ chingly vibration metallic like sound similar to a wine glass harmonic rattling while on a vibrating surface. It has already been to a Toyota dealer for diagnosis, and this “ noise” ,was deemed a normal product of the vehicle's function. Is this true? Do all 4runners make this sound over 40 mph? Is there anyone out there experiencing a similar issue with a recent 4runner? I can't believe this sound is normal , and I am the only one bothered by it. Any thoughts on the origin or fix? I welcome any and all constructive advice, I love this Vehicle, but If I can’t remedy this noise issue, I feel I may have to part ways with it. Help….. Video below was taken going approx 40-45 mph. Thank you to all who took the time to help and offer your advice. I actually tried it all, everything that was suggested. I do believe I reduced the sound a bit spraying some silicone lube on the plastic pins holding on the flaps around the wheel. The sound is not completely gone, maybe reduced 60 percent most of the time. My next step is to get a bit of help from my mechanic. Most of the pins on the flaps are a bit hard to get to. I don't have alot of room or equip to start taking wheels off and lift the truck, so working with my mechanic, I hope to put rubber washers or the pins, unless he has a better suggestion. I also discovered a metal shield covering the tailpipe under my 4runner that made a high pitched buzz when I flicked it, not sure if it is involved in my issue, but I might address that too. Any and all suggestions are always welcome, thank you again for your help.

 

Hmm. Can't say I personally have ever heard that in mine. You did an excellent job of describing the sound. Man I wish I could help. Stay positive. We're gonna figure this out.

 

Not normal two things to check is your splash guards in your wheel well the little push pin screw doesn’t seat right and it can rattle which you will hear in your cabin

if it sounds like two pieces of styrofoam rubbing against each other it will be the outside cowl moulding by your windshield wiper if your press on it you can hear the noise

I had a 2022 4Runner where there was a rattle coming from behind the headliner and passanger vent which wasn’t commmom the other two issues are common you can look them up on YouTube

 

I'd check air intake as well and make sure it's seated correctly. Also hood tightness. It's easily adjusted by simply twisting the rubber boots mounted inside above the bumper where the hood meets when closed.

 

I’ve had the same exact sound. Almost guaranteed it’s the splash shields in the front wheel wells. The cheap, fast and easy way to get rid of the noise is to take the pins out (save them)., and use plastic zip ties instead to hold the splash shield on. Put them on nice and tight and go for a ride and report back.

If that was indeed the problem, you can keep them on for the long term. If it ever needs to come off for maintainance, some side-cutters make quick work of snipping them off.

But if you think it’s a janky fix, you can find ways make the pins have a tighter grip to get rid of the noise. Or you can get some aftermarket splash shields that are thicker and don’t flop around at all (which is what I eventually did).

 

Needle bearing? Try 4wd to see if it goes away.

I had the needle bearing make noise new, on my first drive home from the dealer… but the needle bearing noise does not sound like the noise being described in the first post.

 

I wrote the OP a note. I just got a new 24 ORP two weeks ago and thought I heard something on way home in 20 miles but not as pronounced as his video. It sounded different for a short stretch vs my 2021.

Then I drove to get fluid film, Xpel, windows tinted and heard nothing but that was 35mph and only two miles or so.

I would drive again but I just waxed it and covered it for winter up here and put storage insurance on. I will follow this thread closely

 

Whoa! You got a new one? Sweet! What color? You might have picked up one of the very last ones made!

 

Yeah I got another silver. I think it is one of the last built in August. I will have to put the 500 break in miles on in spring. It was nice weather here last week so I washed and waxed, stabil, and covered. I am hoping to keep this one 25 years and thus won’t be used in winter.

 

nope not normal at any speeds. I 2nd the splash guards. Anything under the seats emitting that sounds?

 

I can't tell from your video, but it could be the molding on the side of the passenger seat. I've heard of this before, look at these videos.

Splash guards, driver’s side, drove me crazy, read about on here, replaced the push pins with shorter ones I had in my roll away.

 

When you guys talk about splash guards is that the same as what I would call the mud flap that hangs down to prevent mud and or stones from kicking off the tires?


Or is this the black plastic wheel well liner? Sorry if this seems like silly question

 

I used black duct tape. Three little 1"x1" squares spaced out along the top edge. Problem solved.

My 2017 ,when very new, had a weird squeeky sound that was coming from the plastic wheel well engine shields behind the front wheels. On line I found and followed the suggested idea of WD 40 on each of the "plastic rivets" that secure this spray shield. It worked!
I remember an after market replacement shield fitted to our trucks was for sale. That was going to be my Plan B.
Hope you fix it easily.

Mine was the splash guards too thanks for the tip!

 

The sound comes from the space between the side mirror and A pillar on the exterior. I have also noticed the 'whistling' sound. One time when I heard it, I rolled down my window and put my hand between the side mirror and A pillar and that seemed to stop/disrupt the sound. Once I removed my hand the sound came back. I chalked it up to the aerodynamics of the vehicle and just learned to live with it.

I've seen wind deflectors like this for a Supra but have not looked for one for a 4Runner.
