Buying it back salvage isn't a bad option if the price is right and you are up to working on it. Our 2001 QX4 got totaled in 2016 with nothing more than a fender bender and got paid out most of what I paid for it minus the $250 it took to buy it back. Went to a salvage yard and it has been good enough for me.

Of course this is a higher value vehicle, but you may be happy if you are comfortable going this route.

Maybe silly question but did you try it with the seat all the way down? That’s a bummer

I just saw a new Kia? It has the same shifter as the new 4R. Or the 4R copied Kia?

Luckily I have a nice '20 Ridgeline in addition to the wife's Subie so I'm not up the creek for transportation. I really drank the 4Runner Kool-aid when I made the purchase. I thought I was buying a rig that would last me 20 years. Shit happens, first world problems, all that.. lol.

There are indeed a lot of nice vehicles out there. Maybe I'll take the money, sell the Ridgeline and get a nice truck. The prices for used 5th gens is out of control right now, and there are bargains to be had on other vehicles. I waited to pounce on my 4Runner until the deals were good. Only suckers pay retail. :p

Yeah, I'm anxiously awaiting the assessment. If it is good enough, it might make me able to stomach getting hosed on another one, but I think my frugal nature will prevent me from overpaying. I'm sure the 6th gens will be well sorted in a couple of years and those 5th gen values aren't going to stay stupid high forever.

Believe me, I tried it every which way. I like sunroofs, and if I could have made one work in a 4Runner it would have made things infinitely simpler.

Yeah, I've patched together totaled cars a couple of times in my life and it worked out good. This one, though, I'd be leery with all the airbags having gone off. It would have to be stupid cheap.

As it is, I'm sure some Russian will be selling it on Craigslist here in PDX eventually. They seem to dominate the salvage title used car business around here. :p

Dude let me tell you I am frugal also and I am an accountant which does not help my case. But I’m getting older and I’m starting to realize health issues and life issues can come any day. If it’s what you truly want be willing to spend some more money now on want you want. I’ve been there just like you and I have only owned four cars since age 16 and pushing the midlife mark.

You don’t want to look back in 6 mos saying I wish I would of. This is the last call and closing time on 5th Gen

There is a song my Grandfather used to sing who was a musician for weddings etc.

It’s called “Enjoy yourself it’s later than you think” by Guy Lombardo. I have started to think more about the meaning of that song now much more than I did it my 20s and 30s.

I can't believe no one has brought up a 22' or 23' GX460 yet. A little more headroom to work with in those.

Interesting vehicle for sure just read the car driver review. It’s not exactly aesthetically pleasing to me like a 4Runner but I can appreciate its abilities. I am going to guess though if the OP does not want to spend over msrp for a 4Runner this might be outside the scope of what he would want to spend as well

I love my Runner and it’s been great but I miss the truck capabilities.

When my 2010 Tacoma, I was looking at used 2nd gen Tacoma prices were starting to get crazy. Runner and FJ prices were also crazy so I bought new and got the better APR.

Nice little tune. Yeah, I need to take that to heart sometimes.

I'm going to look hard to find one that would work for me. Not too optimistic at this point but I'm looking.

I looked at those new when I bought the 4Runner. They are sweet! I didn't think I could bring myself to take a new one into the mountains and thrash it. I should put used ones on my radar, though!
Now the is something that I know nothing about. You've got me curious!

Not familiar with these at all, but I must see it looks intriguing. I'm not opposed to spending a lot if the value is there and it's what I want. I just don't want to OVERpay for whatever I get.

The Ridgeline does an amazing job for what it is. A very versatile vehicle, comfortable and practical. NOT an off-roader. Not exciting or fun in any way. It was collecting dust after I got the 4Runner. But when you need to haul something stinky or wet, nothing but a truck will do.

I considered a Ridgline especially the new trail sport trim looks more agressive. My good friend is Honda Service manager and claims most of the bugs are worked out now. I loved the V6 so quick and refined, and quiet when you want and a nice sound when you hit the gas hard.

I needed something small to tow though and felt the frame is better from a safety perspective. Plus the Ridgeline while growing on me still looks blah compared to the 4Runner. Even a Ford Ranger looks nicer to me than the Ridgeline. But after a bad experience with Ford not sure I could go back.

But yeah the Ridgeline is practical in many ways. There is a lot of backseat room too compared to the new 4bangers. Even the new Tacoma has less room especially when you get all the stupid batteries back there in a hybrid.

Tall people don’t like the sunroof because it reduces the headroom by a couple of inches.

The Ridgeline is very capable for what it is. I pushed it to its limit before I got the 4Runner. Mine is the 20' model, so it has the good transmission but it is before they butched up the front end. Its styling is as bland as unbuttered toast, for sure. 85,000 miles and I have not had a single problem with it. The 4Runner just has that Je ne sais quoi, though. If I'd have hit that deer in the Ridgeline it would be interesting to see how it would have turned out.
