USAA says they will almost certainly total my 23 ORP. Can't believe it. Hit a deer at 60 MPH, every airbag in the truck deployed. Front end, driver quarter panel and hood are toast. Had 16,000 miles on it. I am crushed. I planned on keeping this thing forever. I have tree-branch scratches from bumper to bumper from bombing down narrow trails. I have thrashed this thing and loved every minute of it. I used its capabilities every week in the mountains and love the feeling of security having a rugged vehicle gives me when I'm out in the boonies.

What vehicle can replace it? The new ones are gone, and the used ones are going for more than I paid for mine. I got 5K off of MSRP on mine a year ago. I could wait for a 6th gen but I am sure the dealers will be hosing people on those for a good long time.

I am a tall guy, long torso. My ORP had no sunroof, a must for me. It also had KDSS. I could never find another one like it. Such a bummer.

You might still find a new 2024 if you frantically search around. Maybe not in your state but in some state.
Otherwise used is your only option.
You can also look at the new LC or the Lexus.

These would be on my wish list:

    60 Series Land Cruiser.
Third or fourth generation Ford Bronco.
First or second generation Chevy Blazer.
    First generation Jeep Wagoneer.
    International Harvester Scout II.

Damn shame, it really is. Hopefully you didn’t get injured. You gave her a good life and it sounds like you got memories that will last.

You also have the option buying that sucker back with a salvage title (depending on how much insurance wants for it) and making a bad-ass trail rig out of it. Maybe even throw out the airbag system, tape over the associated idiot lights, throw the headliner away, cut the roof skins off, and make a alucab style pop-top for it! Turn it into a trail ready mini RV rig! The possibilities are endless!!

I’m betting it wont be too hard to fix the bodywork yourself after a few visits to salvage yards and youtube university. Shoot some “good enough” rattle can paint on the panels, run it through some low hanging branches, and it will look like her old self. It might be a fun way to learn a new hobby and end up with the perfect rig.

My apologies, it appears I’ve just hoisted onto you my own contingency plan lol

My other plan was to buy @Technologic80 ‘s 4runner cheap as a spare, but he didn’t go for my offer. :p

Seriously though, you’d probably be able to get into a newer 5th gen for what insurance will pay out. Show them comparables if you don’t like the first offer, it might help.

I've already given a cursory glance, but, alas, none with my requirements. Almost all that are left are overpriced Pros. I wouldn't mind a Pro, but the sunroof is a dealbreaker for me.

    Thanks for the happy thoughts!

I will see what the salvage price is and how much it costs to fix it, for sure. It is a PITA, I've done it before and come out pretty good, though. My wife's Outback hit a rock in the road and got totaled, took out the bottom of the engine. We put a new motor in it and it is still running strong at 235K miles. I am a little more leery of doing that with a rig that had all of those airbags deploy. Plus it destroyed the front seats and the headliner.

I got such a good deal on mine it would be hard to pay the same price for a used one, but I might just do it if I can't convince myself of a viable alternative. It was the perfect vehicle for what I like to do.

I just replaced the $77 mirror cover after losing it in the bush last week.:p

Plus it has a full tank of gas.

That sucks. Glad you were not injured. I had an accident in my 2014 sr5 over labor day and she was totaled. I found my 2024 trd orp thru jim from leasehackr. Contacted him and he found what I was looking for in about 30 minutes. Flew to Boise to pick her up and drive her home.

Or you can search for 4runner inventory…

Local dealer has a Pro for MSRP in Underground. I went and sat in it just to be sure, but my head touches the roof with the moonroof. Otherwise I would buy it.

    Thanks!

I think I could live without the KDSS, but I sure liked it.

I would take a nice SR5 without a sunroof, now, though. I don't need all the other doo-dads on the Off Road.

Let us bow our heads in prayer for the loss of this 4Runner.

Glad you're okay. What state are you in? Pretty sure our Toyota Dealerships still have 4Runners around.

I would take today off and use that toyota tracker link for inventory above, search 500 mile radiuses for various zip codes across the USA and spend the day on the phone calling sales managers of those dealerships. If you find one put down a solid deposit and go get it or have it shipped.

Obviously you don’t have time to wait for an insurance settlement so just buy it and figure out how much insurance gives you for totaled one later if you can afford it.

Me I’d spend the day calling around the country and try to find anything without a sunroof. If there is anyway one with a sunroof can work then you have more options. Just keep calling dealers. Where there is a will there is a way.

Look out in the Midwest a quick search within 500 miles of Cleveland/Detroit shows many SR5 Premiums. The hardest part I think is no Moonroof. A good sales manager though could help narrow your search my eliminating the code “‘MR” since that is the window sticker code option.

They should be able to tell you who has one. Maybe offer them some cash to help you find one. Unfortunately the website we have access to you cannot search and exclude a moonroof. A dealer can though. I’d offer a sale manager some cash to search for me and give me a list. But that’s just me.

Glad you’re ok b/c you can’t be replaced.

Unfortunately, there are absolutely no new alternatives to a ‘24 4Runner right now, which is exactly why the last ones are disappearing fast. A stripped out LC (1958) costs as much or more than the remaining ‘24 Pros, which outside of mpg, are better trucks with more features.

Gotta hustle, and enlist help here to find one of the last ‘24’s on a dealer lot, but prepare to travel. Failure is not an option- find one, and don’t forget to post pictures - good luck!

I posted in another thread recently..... a bunch of '23/'24 ORDs without sunroofs (not premiums) recently hit the market in the Northeast... at least a few dozen of them. Former rental vehicles sold at auction and bought mostly by dealers to resell. All seem to have 10-20k miles. A dealer near me has several of them..... I almost bought one before finding a new '24 in the spec that I wanted. https://www.johnstonstoyota.com/used-inventory/index.htm?make=Toyota&model=4Runner

I don't think I could buy a used rental base SR5 for more than I paid for my ORP new. I just couldn't do it.

if you take a look at the search results in that link I posted, they have actually have a couple of former-rental ORPs..... but I hear you and I can certainly relate.

Sorry to hear man. It was definitely a difficult decision when my Tacoma was totaled in late 2018. I had no idea what to get and my weekend car developed a pretty good oil leak. I narrowed it down to the Runner and a F150 but obviously went Runner because a full size didn’t fit my current living situation. I love my Runner but wish I would have gone with another pickup. If it happened again today I’m not too sure what I would do. Maybe a GX550 but more than likely a new Ranger V6, new F150 5.0, Frontier V6 or possibly a Bronco if I wanted to stay with a SUV.

My daughter totaled her car a year ago. Before it was totaled it was worth more than when we bought it, because of inflation and the covid supply chain bs, and when the insurance settled up we got more than we had paid. That took the pain out of buying a replacement.
