Since I don't have any Woodford Reserve because djwantke didn't go out and buy some (slacker!) I broke out the bong and sparked up a big, fat bowl.

Just another Jim Beam and Coke night in North Carolina..

 

Just picked up a bottle of Jim Beam. Waiting until 8:00pm SoCal time before I pour my first JB with Mineral Water.

 

I am wondering if you have any info on this new brand?

Had some Gentleman Jack and coke tonight then decided to open the bottle of Casamigos blanco; I had some neat then some on the rocks. I personally prefer the Don Julio blanco more. It is smoother and has a better, less synthetic flavor. I will be 38 this week and will open the 1942 this weekend to celebrate a bit.

 

Nothing in particular. Agave spirits are relatively new to South Africa and from my experience (I spend like 4-6 weeks a year down there) they haven't really mastered the process. It tastes like they overcook the agave.

 

I opened the 1942 and had a glass. It is smooth and has a nice rich flavor; I definitely think it is the best tequila I have had. I know people knock it for having additives and not being straight harsh natural tequilas but it's a nice sipper for sure and I find it very enjoyable for special occasions. I would not splurge for it as a weekend drinker(I prefer the normal Don Julio blanco) but it would be worth buying again once in a while.

 

I like these for now.

 

I have read good things about those and If I come across them I will buy and try it! Right now I'm just drinking a white claw with extra vodka added lol

Don't think I have ever had an Old Fashioned or know how to make one. What is that impaled on the bamboo stick resting on the rim of the glass?

I believe, but don't quote on this because I had a couple yrs back that an old timer was making them @ cabin we were staying in for ATV ride in NW Pa. that the Cherry is in the drink when you get one? I think Bourbon & ??? My friend who worked W/cabin owner said the local old timer made them pretty much straight on booze after he had a couple. Not a dark alcohol drinker at all. Ever since early 20's 24-25 had shots of Wild turkey at New Years eve party, that did it for me. Absolute or Grey Goose is mine W/Iced Tea or Lemonade or Cranberry Juice when I have that type of drink.

A traditional old fashioned is booze (typically Bourbon/whiskey), sugar, bitters and water.

In Wisconsin, we have our own version, that originated during prohibition (though there seem to be several versions of the story).

We use Brandy (Korbel is standard).

The Wisconsin style old fashioned starts with a wedge of orange, cherry, sugar (I use sugar cubes), and bitters. You muddle these, and then add ice, Brandy (to taste, I usually fill about 1/3 - 1/2 of the glass), and top off with soda. Usually 7up for sweet, or Squirt for sour.

Edit: I typically don't stir it very thoroughly, which is intentional. The drink usually starts out kind of strong and then as you get to the end it gets sweeter.

People from other states, especially bartenders, have a tendency to hate this drink. I understand that it's not a traditional old-fashioned, but I think it's worth a try if you've never had one that way.

I actually saw a video where some bartender was making one and complaining the whole time about what a ridiculous drink it was, and then he tried it at the end and liked it, lol.

 

I highly recommend High West's latest addition, BiB. Strong vanilla and honey finish.

 

My standard Old Fashioned at home is; 3-4 dashes bitters on a sugar cube then muddled, 2oz rye whiskey, 1/4 oz of Jamo Orange, 2 medium ice cubes, Luxardo cherry.
