UPDATE: To those who had a dealer on their bingo card! -- The Dealer just called with a preliminary report on the issue. Said the other dealer who did the oil change apparently spilled a bunch onto the starter, which caused it to fail and smoke my vehicle. They are going to replace it under warranty and see if anything else shows up.

I guess this explains why the OP couldn't answer if the smoke smelled like oil or wires burning, it was both!!

    Have you heard of exaggeration?

But no I haven't seen one pint of oil because I haven't split that much. Ever... But I can imagine.

I remember once years ago taking my sisters old Ford Tempo to a Midas to have the oil changed. They forgot to put the oil cap back on. Thankfully they added oil but as I started driving smoke started coming out of the hood. I pulled over noticed the cap off and oil smoking the top of the engine. Not the same as the OP’s situation but similar.

OP do they think you just need a starter then? Hopefully the engine and other components are ok?

They probably spilled more oil on the exhaust manifold, which caused the majority of the smoke. But that'll burn off eventually.

I like that the 4runner legendary reliability may still be intact. Unfortunately it's not a hilux or maybe it would have survived with some simple tools...

How does oil spilled on your starter cause your engine to stall?

...or continue running after ignition is turned off, or all the other electrical codes...

I have a feeling the search for other issues after starter replacement is likely to reveal another chapter to this story. Perhaps the same root cause but probably more to learn.

So far, it's only a starter, but I agree. With so many codes thrown in, I don't know how it could be only that. They are installing it tomorrow and said they will see how it performs after or if it has any remaining codes. I hope it's only that, but I'll find out more tomorrow. They said it would be ready by the end of the day.

They could not do that episode today putting it in the ocean. They would get a lot of negative feedback. I guess better they tried with that vehicle thought versus a Tesla

    ^THIS^

It will be interesting to see if the dealer offers up that additional information, i.e. "Turns out, lots of other stuff was damaged and we fixed that too. Here's the list." vs. "You're all set."

I bought a new Land Rover years ago (shut up, I know) and would take it in for various things and would leave with a one page, short receipt/statement of work. Later, I asked for the full history of all TSBs, warranty repairs and maintenance. The list was massive - transfers case, exhaust manifold, sections of the wiring harness, on and on. Most of that work was done on days the I got paperwork showing oil and filter or similar.

Moral to that story - ASK for the full report.

Bad situation, hope it works in your favor. Bummer, as we generally buy 4R’s (and other pre-TNGA-F Toyota trucks) specifically because we don’t want service reps touching them more than what is absolutely necessary. Like, I don’t even trust that the lugs are torqued right after a rotation.

On the bright side, at least you don’t own a Tundra that’s slated for a TTV6 swap at a local dealership. Or, a new tranny on a ‘24 Tacoma for that matter. Good luck.

@4Hopper is spot on here! I've been doing my own tire rotations for the past 15+ years (lately using a calibrated torque wrench) as I got tired of techs torqueing my lugs to hundreds of foot-pounds. Also, I had a co-worker who recently broke off a wheel stud while changing a flat, probably due to excess torque by the shop he used.

My wife's nephew has a Tundra with 8,000 miles on it that's pending a TTV6 replacement. He's not excited about it.

UPDATE : They replaced the starter but still not working. Called me to find out about any MODs I did because they said they were plugged into the ECU. I listed them, and they will test and diagnose them now. Thing I don't understand is that I had those done at 3k miles and had no issues till 11k when the dealer did the 10K service on the vehicle.

Damn, this could get ugly - as the dealership says the problems were caused by the mods plugged into the ECU... and the shop that did the mods says it was caused when oil was spilled on the ECU.

Yeah exactly. I had this work done months ago and 7k miles ago and no issues till the oil got onto the starter. I looked online what a failed starter can cause and it says:
Yes, a failed starter can cause electrical issues that may damage a car's Electronic Control Unit (ECU):

    • Overheating: A starter can overheat when you're trying to start your car, which can increase the likelihood of electrical issues and smoke.

    • Blown fuses: A starter is part of a car's electrical system and can be subject to blown fuses.

    • Short circuits: A starter can cause short circuits, which can damage the ECU.

    :(

Unfortunately, I had a feeling this was coming... I'm sensing that they're going to use this as their "get out of jail free" card.

In addition, the oil story doesn't make sense. Wouldn't you have seen this leaving the dealership?

    Cheers,
