Got into an accident yesterday. Hit another vehicle and flipped on its side? Ya’ll think it’s totaled? 2022 sr5 with 26k. Side airbags deployed. Front quarter damage and driver side damage and roof damage near the tailgate.

A lot of minor damage and air bag replacement with inner trim panels. Most of an exterior repaint and clear. Easy repair, but not cheap, and will take a while. Nothing structural though, so even if it's an economical total, I'd keep it.

Sure glad you are okay, that must have been quite an experience! Care to share any details of the accident?

I can’t answer your question with certainty because I’m not an insurance adjuster, but my guess would be it is totaled.

Any chance you have a photo taken from the other side of the 4Runner?

Airbags are not a definitive factor when totaling a vehicle.

My wife was rear ended pretty hard on the freeway about a year ago in a new XC90. Every air bag went off except the front 2 air bags. Not totaled. I was shocked. It did take 4-5 months to get repaired though.

But they're a pretty good indicator. Curtain airbags typically take out everything above chest level so it's not uncommon to see $10-15k before you even touch the exterior.

Welcome. That looks like a it's gonna depend on the body shop tearing it down to see the internal damage.

I'd save the entire vehicle. Inevitably there will be someone with a 2025 4Runner who will want to do an engine swap with a 2024. Mark my words.

Take heart, even if it gets sent to a salvage yard…it will live on. The scrap yard has already saved me thousands when my transfer case went out. Found one with the same mileage for less than 200 bucks.

Now that 5th gen production is over, its sacrifice will not be in vain.

I think we all need to bow our heads and say a special prayer for this particular 4Runner and its owner. This never should have happened with only 26K on the clock.

But we’re talking about a 2022 4Runner with 26k miles on it. The retail value is still over $30k so $10-$15k repair is not the end of the world. Also, it’s a Toyota. Won’t cost $10k to replace a curtain airbag.

It's not just the airbag... Side airbags don't conveniently deploy out a seam like the fronts, they typically break panels and stitching and it appears they all deployed here. OP is looking at all the upper and upper pillar trim, headliner, curtain airbag, seat uppers, front air bags... that number is just what I've commonly seen for the interior parts and labor before whatever happens outside.

Insurance companies are hesitant to insure a salvaged vehicle once airbags are deployed.

Actually, airbag deployment doesn’t always mean it’s totaled. It’s all based on actual cash value of the the vehicle.

I know that in Europe and Hong Kong, airbag deployment is an automatic total even if the actual damage to the vehicle is minor and actually fixable.

Back in November 2015, when we were still living in the old house, one of my neighbors crashed his 2013 BMW 5-series into a parked VW Passat belonging to another neighbor’s live-in nanny. The Passat was like a 2010, and was totaled. All of the airbags went off in the BMW, and it had roughly $18K in damage including the airbags, but it was fixed.

The body shop that has fixed my Tacoma a few times had an almost new Ford F150 on the lot waiting for repairs in about 2018. The truck had damage to the rear axle, and minimal body damage, but the side curtain airbags were deployed; I asked the body shop owner what had happened, and he told me that the owner had hit a nasty pothole. This not only blew out the tire and tweaked the axle, but tricked the airbag sensors into thinking the truck was about to roll over and triggered an airbag deployment. The spare was put on, and the truck was able to be driven to the body shop under its own power. The cost of just replacing the airbags came to about $4,000 but this was a $60,000 truck, so the insurance company paid to fix it.

It’s true, not all insurance companies will insure a salvaged vehicle and if they do they will most likely charge more and offer reduced coverage due to less market competition and potential $afety liability.
Went through this with a motorcycle.

    https://www.carinsurance.com/Articles/how-to-buy-insurance-for-salvage-title-car.aspx

“Can you get full coverage on a vehicle with a rebuilt title?
Companies that write car insurance policies for vehicles with rebuilt titles tend to offer liability insurance only. While it is difficult to find an insurance carrier that will provide the owner the option of adding on comprehensive and collision, it’s not impossible.

Insurers may not be willing to provide comprehensive coverage, which protects you if damage to your car isn’t due to an accident. It would cover theft, vandalism or damage from a natural disaster. You also may be unable to obtain collision coverage, which covers your vehicle if it’s damaged in an accident.”
