    No wait there’s 4:
    • Ladder
    • Baby on Board sticker
    • Raptor Lights
    • Heritage grill

I have none of these things on my vehicle, but I seem to have less contempt for them than others do. At least the ladder has a function. Those things aren’t any worse than al lot of other stuff that people do to their vehicles.
    • L.E.D obsession
    • Blackout obsession
    • Improving the “stance”.

And that is? If you can't get to the roof top on either the rear bumper, rear tire, or slider/step There's a problem. I mean, you have to get on the rear bumper to get on the cute little ladder anyway. Plus it adds weight to the rear hatch and it's structure. I see no benefit or function.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

Agreed. If you can reach the roof rack then all you have to do is step on the rear bumper, grab the roof rack and pull yourself up. I don't see how the ladder serves any purpose. I've never seen anyone use it. Even the overlanding bro's who have roof top tents (that never get used).

    Hey, that's another: RTT's!

Right! I want to see actual proof of someone using it. Never happens.

My RTT was used over 30 times this year, well 10 months, so I disagree with RTTs being useless. That being said, I would have used a ground tent for 10 to 15 of those times, as those were festival camping. But I wouldn’t have spent the other 15 to 20 days adventuring with out the RTT.

Sometimes actually being on the roof rack yourself can facilitate securing the load. Just a guess, but I’d say that is the purpose the ladder serves.

Speaking of racks, there’s Elly May. Definitely a more useful rack.

Oh man! I’m totally going to strap a sofa to the top of my 4Runner!

And speaking of modifications, isn’t that the car that Caractacus Potts turned into Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?

Also you never know when you might need to strap grandma to the roof. Could be useful for that.

Sounds like you have experience. But at that point maybe a ladder would be useful?

    This.

I don't have a ladder. Well, I did buy one, but never installed, and sold it.

But, if I had a full roof rack covered with gear, I'd probably use the ladder to get on top to access things more easily.

Could be someone who removes their rack when it's not needed. I take my basket off in winter to save fuel.

There's around 47 cubic feet of space behind the rear seat in the 4Runner. How much more crap are you taking with you?

I think of mods in 3 categories..

-1- functional- things that can actually improve the function of the vehicle. Things like armor, recovery equipment, quality suspension, etc

-2- aesthetic- things that people just enjoy looking at, such as Raptor lights, and probably some of the stuff mentioned in this thread, if it doesn't get used.

-3- stupid- things that actually make a vehicle perform worse, or reduce safety and/or visibility, such as squatted trucks, cars with ridiculous negative camber, stretched tires, etc.

I'm happy to make fun of the 3rd category all day long.

I was gonna say molle panels, but…

This is proof that molle panels aren’t worthless. In fact, some very large external molle panels might be the perfect spot for a ladder.:D

Just because it’s a bed platform turned on it’s side doesn’t mean it’s not a molle panel :p;)

I tend to bring a lot for longer trips. Cooking gear, coolers, camp chairs, fishing gear, kayak stuff (sometimes), canopy tent, cocktail fixings, etc..

But, in some cases, folks might just want to sleep in the cargo area without having to unload everything. Some might keep essential gear on the roof full time to free up interior space.

I'm definitely not saying that everyone with a ladder actually needs it. But, if you have a bunch of crap on the roof you need to access regularly, a ladder might make that easier.
