    Hello gents,

new 4Runner owner( picked it up 23 hrs ago) trying to hardwire a dash cam. Was wondering if y’all have any suggestions on where to place the fuse adapters? I have yet installed any mods. Thanks in advance!

    cheers,
    S

    Oooh look, another mod.....

You don't have to hard wire it, unless you have a dash cam with parking mode. Even though, I don't recommend that you do it. You can wire the dash cam directly into the rear view mirror.

Welcome. So you already have run a hardwire kit? Or your just doing research?
The dongar adapter to the power mirror works amazing

I have both in 2 different vehicles. Mirror adapter is easy AF.

That's one of the bonuses with my FitCamx dashcam, it has the dongar-type adapter built in.

Thank you both for your advice. Yes I’m still in the research phase but after TWO hit’n’run with my old car I would like to have it record 24/7.
    FitCamx looks really cool tho

Don't do that. It'll overheat and cause issues. Draining your battery or causing the dash cam to over heat SO much that it stops working. Just get a lot of insurance, mainly un-insured and under-insured.

Think about it. If someone hits you while you're parked and then leaves, even if you catch their vehicle/license plate, the chances are they don't have insurance.

I used a fusetap for my Thinkware cams. Have them in all of my cars. I co start power source, the other with ig itinerary power source. I have been using them since 2018, no issues.

Didn’t know that. I thought those hardwiring kit come with a device to prevent dash cam from draining out the battery.

I will try to get a picture of mine tomorrow. I live in Southern Illinois where we get temps of 100 plus sometimes during the summer and I have never had an issue with overheating. I do have tinted windows and use a sun shade

Thanks a lot! I live in Canada so I guess overheating should not be an issue lol. After some research it seems the empty slot on my fuse box along with KDSS are the safest bets ( mine is limited so no KDSS).

Any updates for this topic? I'm having the same question as to which fuses to tap for engine on and always on? And also which bolt you can use for ground?

I was also confused why I could not find fuse layout anywhere in the owner's manual, am I blind or it's simply not in there? 2024 ORP

I ended up with using the open fuse spot between FOG RR and AMI for BAT and KDSS for ACC ( mine is limited so I guess KDSS fuse is just an open spot for me?). I will take a pic of mine fuse box tomorrow. So far it has been working great.

Thank you for the pics, 707like.
I have questions now. First, how is that blank space connected? (As in, under what conditions does that location get power?) And second, the one above it is labeled FOG RR. Is that connected to a rear-facing fog lamp that we don't get in the U.S., or is that for what we know as the rear "defroster," or is it indicating something else?

Research to do when I get some garage time next. :)

Sorry for the delay. Snapped a picture just now. So far it’s been working perfectly.

What I learned last night is that the open space in 707like's pic (snipped below) actually holds a 10A fuse in my fuse box.

I still don't know what it goes to, nor why it's marked out on the diagram... but it's there!

I also learned that the fog lamp fuse in the engine-box fuse box is evidently ahead of the relay, for it's always energized.

    Still more learning to do...

Interesting. That spot was open on mine as well. Not sure why yours is different…

Finally got some time to work on this, I ended up also using the empty slot between FOG RR (which I think is actually the front fog light since I don't see another FOG FR fuse) and AMI for constant power (I tested all 3 empty slots with multi meter and they all have constant power, but since this one's smaller I find it easier to insert). However for engine on I tapped into the P/OUTLET instead of ACC, I found this fuse layout (apparently not 2024 MY but should be similar I guess?) from another post showing the ACC was "multiport fuel injection system/sequential multiport fuel injection system", which sounds like something important/vital so I wouldn't want to tap into that.

So far I just tested the dash cam and it works, haven't driven the car yet. If anything went wrong I'll come back and update. Now I just need to get an extended fuse cover lol

I don't intend to be argumentative, but I'll offer this: the FOG RR fuse does NOT go to the front fogs on mine.
    1) I pulled that fuse last night, and the fogs stayed on. Probably because
    2) the fuse for the front fogs is in the big fuse box behind the battery.

BTW, that fuse is always energized (as in, it's ahead of the relay in the circuit).
