Hub Centric Wheels

    Eibach Stage 1 Shocks with OEM Springs.
    I purchased my 4runner with aftermarket wheels (XD Series) and recently purchased new tires and kept getting a slight shake over 60mph and I had two different shops try balancing four times with no luck, I then figured out that my wheels were 106.25 and when I loosened the lugs and spun it I could could see a slight gap on the hub. I took aluminum tape and carefully cut pieces and went around the hub twice without overlapping on each hub and it totally fixed it, smooth as butter... I am leaning towards getting the TRD Pro rims to go back to hub centric but I am curious if there are wheel brands that are exact at 106.1mm out there?

    I know this post is old, but I have to bump it. I have been dealing with this issue for a few weeks and this solved my problem. Method 316 wheels, 106.25mm hub bore. Bad shake at 60mph. Multiple road force balances, all said they were as good as they were going to get. I found this thread and said to myself, what the hell, I'll try anything at this point. This SOLVED my issue 100%. Thank you!

    Why not just get the correct hub bore wheels? There's literally hundreds of choices out there. This fix seems a little janky.

    The tape really just helps you to center the wheel, its not providing any structural integrity. Once the lugs are torqued down it doesn't matter anymore. Trust me, I thought it was stupid as well, but it absolutely solved my steering shake. I bought Method wheels because they seem to very popular in the 4Runner community. They are advertised on TireRack and the Method website as "hub centric" for 4Runner. I don't know if I am in the minority or what, but that tiny .15mm of space made a HUGE difference for me.

    I used Nashua brand foil tape, and I used 2 layers.

    i read about hub centric wheels and wanted to see if that will help with my shake.. i read several articles on what size to get. i ordered some off Amazon but when I had my new tires put on a few weeks back they called and said the hub centric rings i got do not fit. i just don't have all the proper tools to take the wheel off and torque back the lugs.. i have stock size tires with TRD Pro rims.

    i went with sizwe O.D. 108mm and I.D. 106mm

    I’m pretty sure if those are stock TRD Pro wheels that they’re already hub centric. If so, you wouldn’t need the rings, because the wheel would fit perfectly over the hub.

    Are the wheels you have now OE Toyota wheels? If so, I’m pretty sure the bore would be perfectly sized. However, the bore may be oversized if they are aftermarket reproduction wheels. You would need the hubcentric rings only if the bore of the wheels is oversized.

    the silver rims and tires shown in the pic are the OE set when I purchased the 4R.. now I currently have stock tires size but AT tires and the TRD Pro bronze wheels i purchased from toyota..

    i just would have to take off the tire and measure it myself.. I read a few articles and just assumed that size they mentioned for the hub rings where the same for me as well since I had trd pro rims..

    A lot janky. But why not risk your wheel vibrating the lug nuts off while traveling 60mph+ in a 5,000lb automobile? What’s the worst that can happen.
    TAPE = NUTS!!!
    A insurance company would sue you into oblivion if you caused a wreck with tape balancing your wheels. Insane that we take these risks for aesthetics.

    A toyota parts department could give you the exact bore hole specs, that way you don’t have to take off the wheels to check.

    The tape is not balancing the wheel. It is simply providing the ~.15mm of space to center it on the hub. That's all its doing. You can literally rip the tape out once the lugs are torqued down. Its the exact same concept as centering rings, except they don't make centering rings that thin.

    Do us a favor and show a picture of one of your lug nuts. Reason being, even though it says "hub centric" the reality is that most aftermarket wheels are "lug centric". [​IMG]You're going to want something that looks like this that will not only seat the wheel, but center it as well. See how it's conical and then tapers to the size of the wheel stud bore? It doesn't matter if you put all of the tape in the world on the hub if you don't have the correct lug nuts. If you repeatedly hit bumps, eventually it's going to crush the tape and the wheel will move. Remember that aluminum wheels are only torqued to 90ish ft. lbs. Thats plenty to keep them on, but it's not going to prevent wheel movement around the bore.
    In my case, I not only have the correct hub bore size (106.1mm), but I also have the correct lug centric nuts. Toyota OEM are both hub and lug centric.

    TRD Pro wheels, TRD pro valence and grill, black out lettering.
    talk about overreacting. Seriously people run aftermarket wheels with no issues. The tape is completely unnecessary as long as you have correct lug nuts and tighten them in correct pattern. Have over 100k on aftermarket wheels on my Tacoma with no issues.

    @babaki1 You also want these because Toyota studs are short to go with the mag style lug nuts from the factory. Minimum thread bite should be the width of the stud (12mm) but with my Method 701s, I was only getting 7mm in the front.

    Nope totally fine with about ~4mm or so clearance to the hub and I've been running them since a week after I bought my wheels. I assumed what I thought was a rounding error on the spec sheet that they were hub-centric but as they're not, these fixed my vibration.

    i ordered these black lugs from toyota when I put the TRD rims on..
    not from this exact dealership but here is the part # PT0766020002

    it may be possible these gorilla ones recommended, may help/fix the issues.. thanks for sharing.. i willing to try anything lol..
