Carrying Spare Fuel

Wavian Gas cans are the answer. I have two 5 gallon and two 2.5 gallon. Outstanding durability, no leaks, quality finish. I have been using them since 2012, my first offroad trips. 2.5 gal I mount on the roof rack, and 5 gal I keep in my small cargo trailer if I need to take more equipment. Soon I will get two more of the 2.5 gal I think, just in case. They are not as tall as the 5 gal. They are perfect for the roof rack. Unless you have side panels on your rack, then you can take the 5 gal with you, but you will have to fabricate the holders for them. As far as the 2.5 gal holders, you can buy those too. I got mine at globalindustrial.

I went for a 10L Scepter water can today. No more gallon jugs from Walmart bouncing around and leaking in back. I'll have to get another one for when I'm not solo.

(I still haven't chosen a method for carrying extra gas).

That looks like a handy mod. The Scepter is backup water, so if I need to use it, I won't want to lose a drop.

 

The best non steel gas can I ever bought was made by Gott . They use to make coolers . I bought 5 of them for my generator about 20 years ago.

Very heavy plastic and from the pic you can see the size difference between the two 5 gallon cans . The Gott are short and fat so when full it’s very hard for them to tip over .
Not real cool or tactical looking like the Wavian cans though .
There’s 3 more full ones outside of this pick . I live in SW Florida one mile from the Gulf and we have another storm coming in a few days . ☹️

Thanks! And yes, it does. It's a split-handle "poacher's spade" made by Clarington Forge, in the UK. I read a lot of reviews on what kind of shovels people went with for expeditions, and it came highly recommended. It's narrow enough to get in deep underneath the vehicle to scoop out snow or sand, without being unwieldy, but long enough to not kill your back like a folding shovel.

 

I recognized it from a “How It’s Made “ segment. Very classy. I agree that a mid-length D-handle shovel is the right tool for the job. How does the wooden handle hold up to the weather?

The wood has done just fine (everything from summer in BCS to winter snow/ salt in Colorado). I'm a bit disappointed in how fast the bare metal portion developed surface rust, especially considering I wiped it down with CLP before I put it on the roof rack, but maybe that was asking too much with the weather extremes. It lives inside the truck now. lol

 

I used JB Weld and glued in a 3.5” length of 1/2 copper pipe into my Wavian nozzle. It makes it way easier to use when refueling my truck.

That is what I am talking about. I also reuse mine for water storage, after I have used up all of my gas supplies. Do you do that too?

 

Uh, Jake, are you saying that you put gasoline in your fuel cans, embark on your trip, refill the tank with the fuel from the cans, and then fill the empty fuel cans with water? To drink?

 

On the Wavian site it says not to use water in the fuel cans . Something about the water reacting with the coating .

I have a Wavian water can. Not a plastic one like they have for sale now, but a steel one. It differed from the fuel can in that it was powder blue and had a special coating inside - and that had instructions not to put fuel in it because the fuel would dissolve the coating.

 

Oh yes, I can see now.

About 5 years ago I bought a couple Wavian 5 gallon containers to replace a couple gas cans I'd been using for ~ 40 years that had cracked and started leaking. So far they have been flawless, no leaks. Use them constantly....this beast averages only 11.5 mpg.

Although I am still surprised that you haven't read a single post from me that wasn't snarky/rude/argumentative, I appreciate the reasonable reply. And, although I agree some of my posts might be snarky/rude/argumentative if taken personally, most are still helpful.
