What oil filters do you trust the most?

They are fine your engine will go 500k using toyota filters. I wouldn’t worry about it.

 

I think in a dusty environment, perhaps a k&n dirt sucker air filter, and the oem oil filter(if based on that test it can still be called a filter)your engine would disagree with 500k, or at least be making alot more noise than it should.

 

They are perhaps the best option for winter, where flow rate is the most important. Based on that test.

 

I guarantee your toyota oil filter won't cause engine issues at 500k now the pos k&n crap might. They are rubbish

 

A related side question, what is the go-to website you guys buy the OEM filter from?

 

I pick mine up from the parts department at whatever dealer is most convenient. For parts online, I use BAM Wholesale.

Hi There, Valvoline employee here, incase you were curious many of the filters that we sell in store are often made by the factory for vehicles in specific brands, for 4runners (4th gen specific) we get from toyota and them make new lables on, hope this helps!

 

I buy them straight from the dealership. Only $7 each for decent quality. Plus I change my oil at half the interval so it will be just fine.

 

For the Toyota branded filter I just go to my local dealer - I've never seen online prices being better, due to shipping charges.

For the Denso branded filter, I usually add a couple to the cart when ordering other parts, so whichever site I'm ordering other parts from.

I worked at Facet Filter as a media Engineer testing filter paper media, the standard was the media Fram used and today I still use Frams Heavy Duty filters in all my autos and my 08 4Runner along with mobile 1.

 

Used the same sale to stock up on OEM filters via https://autoparts.toyota.com/.

 

I sold my stash of OEM filters and switched to Purolator One. OEM is likely fine but Purolator consistently tests well and the lack of objective test data for the OEM filter leaves me wary.

 

If the filters paper media fails because being clogged or just a mechanical type failure, the housing can crack and your engine oil is pumped out.
The media is the message.

You can read all the filter brands testing reports you want, what you will not find is any reported failure of their filters.

I tested all the major and many minor filter brands, and i know the brands with housings that were not made with really good metal or material not thick enough, or the many brands who did not use quality filter paper.

So you can think your getting all the information on your filter but maybe your really not.

Probably. Filters are probably the same as oil, any that meet the specifications will be fine. But the thought that came to my mind was the discussion around “lifetime” transmission fluid. To Toyota, “lifetime“ is the warranty period. Whereas to us, it’s as long as we can get the truck out of the driveway. I don’t even know if that’s really their mindset, and I would be shocked if it was and extended to oil filters too, so you’re probably right. Any case, I’m going to try Purolator.

In the question that was asked as to whose filters i was refering to i was not refering to any one brand of filters.

The point of my posting was to inform the forum members about my work as a filter testing Engineer, both of their paper media and mechanical construction and that what printed data you read does not fully give all positive or negative information mostly it's just postive.

I advise you to take one of the filters you are using cut it open inspect the mechanical construction of the media, measure the filter cans thickness then decide if you feel you should trust your choice of filter.

I hope this now is in a language not confusing to you.

if you change your oil and filter on a regular basis I am not certain any one filter is better than the next. It is when the the oil and filter are not serviced at the prescribed intervals that the filter comes into play.

There is no perfect filter for everyone, it is just a preference that makes the owner more at ease after the service.

Relax, have a beer and be happy your 4Runner keeps serving you well down the road.

 

Picked up a Purolator Boss and I am impressed with the quality, it's truly the boss.

 

Purolator Boss is better than the Wix XP, do your research. Oil geek also recommends it

 

Stay away from Amsoil, they have the best efficiency but their flow suffers. Toyota prefers excellent flow and good efficiency, Amsoil prefers excellent efficiency and good flow, and I trust Toyota's preference, they are the designers of my motor not Amsoil. Toyota knows that some tiny particles are not a threat to the engine so let them in. If you want a good combination of flow and efficiency, then get the Purolator Boss.

what ever is on sale and oil change every 3-5k end of story. all 0-20w oil is synthetic.
