Programming the computer to ignore absence of blind spot monitoring sensors?

I have a steel bumper ordered, and the sensors need to go away. Will the system detect absence of the sensors? If yes, then how to program the system?

I will have to check when I drive the 4Runner again, but I think that there is a setting in the MID display to turn off BSM. Not sure if you will get an error if the sensors are missing.

 

Wow, I hope it is that simple. I thought we needed to plug in a computer to the OBD port.

I have a 2015 LE, and when I installed steel bumpers the proximity sensors didn’t seem to care at all. I’m not sure if that’s the same thing as a blind spot sensor

That’s correct, it is possible to turn off BSM in the settings. Like you though, I don’t know if it’ll throw an error code once the sensors are gone despite turning it off in the settings.

Nice bumper. Take a look at this video made by Sandy Cats who has a similar bumper. At one point, he shows how he significantly strengthened it and you may want to do the same. He welded the stiffener but I suppose it could attach with bolts. This guy wheels real hard.

This bumper in this sandycats video is a whole different animal, because you have to cut off the entire rear of portion of the 4runner’s frame. It results in a ton of departure angle, but to the point that the swing out is in the line of fire (which he mentioned).

I think bumper that requires removal of the rear crossmember shouldn’t really be considered in the same category as bolt-ons, just because there is no going back once you start hacking at the frame.

 

Hi @Yotaholic. I had a shop install the same bumper last weekend. The sensors worked for about 100 miles and then threw an error. Are yours still working fine? I’m not sure how to troubleshoot. Did you do any special mounting? I know my shop just relocated and bolted them on. Thanks

 

I didn't do anything, I did not touch the sensors. They're still working after more than 15,000 miles. Check if there is mud in that area, wash it and it should work again

 

Awesome news. I had the Ironman 4x4 installed and they told me they moved them up. So you're saying the factory mounts with the factory clips (unbent) worked fine even with the Ironman bumper? I wonder why my shop tried to move them...

 

Tell them to put them back on the way the were. I didn't touch them at all. Once in awhile mud gets in there and the sensor stopp working, that's it

 

This is why you need to stay away from big shops. Proud of my tree shade mechanic, we did things together

 

When the sensor gets dirty or stops working, do you need to clear an OBD-II code or does simply cleaning it make that go away? Every time I turn on the ignition, I get a BSM and RCTA not available warning and I have to manually turn them off in the MID.

 

Because stock bumper is gone and mud gets trapped when you go offroad.

 

No I mean like do I need to buy one of those $200 code clear tools in order to clear that warning myself in the dash? Like right now, when I turn on the ignition, I get the warning that takes over the MID. Then I have to manually turn off BSM and RCTA.

If I clean it right now, will those just go away the next time I turn on the ignition? Or do I need to buy one of those tools to clear that warning? Right now I don't have anything to plug into the OBD port.

I'm obviously new to this so thanks for the guidance

 

Dude, you're overthinking. You don't need any of those things to clear codes, the sensors work with the Iron Man bumper, just put them back in the same place. They stop working only when mud gets there, because there's no cover to protect them from mud. Once you wash the mud off, they start working again

 

Oh, ok! I thought that those warnings on the dash were permanent OBD codes that needed to be cleared.

The 4Runner is at Toyota right now and they said they could not (they tried to) recalibrate the BSM sensors this morning.

Again I don't know if the 3rd party shop that installed the Ironman 4x4 Bumper bent the clip or relocated it. When I picked it up, the sensors worked fine and only threw a warning when I was 50 miles down the road. So perhaps they got a little dirty when I was driving down the highway.

I'll clean it tonight when I pick it up and see if the warnings go away. Will follow up here.

I'm really hoping the brackets weren't bent and that I don't have to do what this guy did. He used a different bumper than us (Victory 4x4 Strike), and bent the brackets, so had to go through the entire recal process on his own. Huge PITA. Fingers majorly crossed that my sensors are just a little dirty.

 

Lights on the dash came on also when snow got there when I was on the mountains

 

Go back to that shop, take your sensors from them, and install them yourself, easy peasy

 

Recalibrate, what nonsense, they don't need recalibration, what crooks!

All the way dead was we removed the sensors, and one stuff Iron Man bumper was installed, we put the sensors back on, no lights, no nothing. And I did go to the dealer afterwards, and you know for what, to buy oil filters from them
