Horrible sound from rear…

Hi Everyone…I have a 2021 4Runner Venture edition and I was driving and heard this squealing noise from the rear wheels, I jacked it up and turned the wheels and sure enough, that’s where the sound was coming from… not sure what is causing the noise, hopefully not bearings, maybe brake pads are worn? Too hard to tell from your video. You are going to have to start disassembling the rear brakes. Sometimes rust/dirt/rocks get stuck in there and keep the pad applied or a caliper slide pin is gummed up or rusty and sticking. If you take it all apart and find the brakes to be in good order, then inspect your bearings.

How many miles do you have on the truck?

 

Maybe a rock stuck between your rotor and the rotor shield? Our Volvo did something similar 6 months back. It was the size of a tic tac but made a terrible noise. Once I got underneath, I could see the rock and poked it out.

 

Approx 52k miles… the noise just immediately started a couple days ago, I haven’t done any off roading, just normal highway driving…

 

Sounds like a rock stuck in the dust shield or maybe the shield got bent somehow.

I'm pretty sure if you pop off the wheel you will see something obvious.

 

That sounds like the brake squealer.
On every set of brake pads there is a little metal finger that sticks out. When the pad wears down to about 20% pad left the metal tab comes in contact with the brake rotor and makes the squeal. This is an audible alarm so the driver can know his/her brake pads are near the end of their life.

Here is the kicker, when you press the brakes you hear the squeal. When you let off the brakes your caliper should "release" the pressure and the squealer should not touch the rotor anymore. From the sounds of yours, your pad / metal squealer tab is staying in contact with the rotor which would mean you most likely have a caliper dragging and not releasing which is keeping the metal squealer tab in contact with the rotor.

52,000 miles sounds about normal for a city driver to need a new set of pads so i am leaning towards its time for pads and a brake cleaning and inspection.

 

Yeah, it’s a constant sound coming from both rear wheels, whether I have the brakes on or not… I’m going to try and take the wheels off before work tomorrow morning and see if I detect anything… thank you

 

Friend had that-was gravel/rock wedged in between caliper and rotor. Take wheel off and inspect.

 

oh...both wheels...doubtful its a rock then.

 

E-brake related, perhaps?

Sounds like the brake squealer to me. It indicates your pads are worn by making an obnoxious noise so you can’t ignore it.

 

Make sure your parking brake isn't partially depressed/engaged.

 

The vehicle is a total dog when you leave the parking brake on. Don't ask me how I know.

 

Update: Well, it was definitely the rear brake pads…they were shot, down to the metal indicator, no damage to rotor I’ll be installing new pads today

 

Definitely recommend machining the rotors, or replacing if they're out of tolerance.

Is 50k early for rear brake pads? For highway driving seems too soon to me.

 

50K is pretty early for rear.

I've never had to replace rears at 50K and mostly city.

 

E-brake needs adjustment maybe?

 

Yeah I agree with you, but it was indeed the rear brake pads, they were down to the squeaker indicator, previous owner must have been really hard on the brakes…

Can't stand when people do that. See them accelerating uphill with brake lights on. Then downhill it goes off.

 

I happened to get around 50k miles in the rear as well. Was hoping for more. The fronts actually wore much less than the rears.

In the old days the rears used to last forever. Now they generally seem to last about the same as the front on most cars. Probably because of most cars has some form of variable brake bias towards the rear brakes as they get loaded down, and probably also due to making them a thickness that on average matches the wear of the front.

 

i ran into one of thise a-holes, told them they had brake light issues. They told me they drive with 2 feet and i told them they were idiots because they were destroying their brakes and driving recklessly. Morons!!

 

I wonder if the proportioning valve is set to give more bias to the rear to try to offset some of the nasty nose dive on stock suspension.

 

^No proportioning valve in the traditional sense. Brake bias continuously varies across the 4 wheels through the ABS unit on vehicles made in the last two decades.

 

I had to replace my rears right around 50k, but I have a relatively heavy rig and I drive it hard. I bought front pads to replace them but when I replaced my tires/wheels, I checked the pads and they were fine. I didn't even think to check the rears, half way to Idaho they started to screech, so I changed out the rear pads in a hotel parking lot.

I think rears used to last a lot longer when most trucks had drums on the rear axle. I think 4 wheel disc, the rears tend to go first.
