X reas

Just saw little oil on the shock/coil
I can't see exactly where it's coming from.
It is not from the connection of the shock to the small pipe...
2020 limited with 54k miles

Are my x reas getting bad?

No other symptoms....

 

Very likely its leaking.

If its leaking it will cost an arm and a leg to replace by Toyota. A good Toyota specialized 4x4shop should be able to swap with regular shocks all 4 corners about 700 bucks on labor (atleast on expensive 4x4shops here in Denver CO). Part prices vary depending on the shocks you choose. Like $400 Bilstien5100 to $4000 ELKA 2.5DC.

Actually, due to inflation it will now cost two arms, one and a half legs and your first born. These are the times we live in now. Adjust!

I replaced XREAS with regular shocks when my Limited was almost new since I wanted to lift. So no experience when its leaking.

 

Ha ha, True. Toyota dealership is the worst on that, screwing customers royally if any repair is needed.

 

If it’s leaking it will need to be replaced with a new system. You can’t repair it. You can also swap it to shocks that work on any other 5th gen. They usually start to leak around 50-70k

By chance do you have an extend Toyota warranty? The factory type not some other third part warranty. If you do it will cover the cost to replace it. Normally shocks are not covered but that system is.

 

The leak is only going to get worse, and you will have degradation in handling. It's going to start to wallow in turns, same as when you have a bad traditional shock/strut. You will have some time because it only looks like a weep. I let mine go until all 4 corners were oozing. Then I literally ripped the entire system out and replaced. Take your pick on what you replace it with.

 

Shocks are not a critical failure item. They will progressively get worse and ride quality will decline. You will notice the vehicle getting bouncy. You do reach a point that the vehicle is unsafe to drive, but I think you will be unhappy with the ride long before you get there.

Our 4Runner XREAS has been leaking for some time and the suspension still handles good with 80k miles. I’ll replace with Bilstein eventually, but no need at this point IMO.
