So inspired by Valvoline Instant Oil change, I'm thinking of grabbing an oil extractor. The weather is going to be crappy for a while so I don't want to get under the truck for every single oil change. Purolator Boss oil filter claims 20,000 miles. 20,000 miles is too much, but what do you think about 10,000, one filter for two oil changes?

I’d say that it makes sense and would probably be ok if you’re putting on miles quickly, and you’re not driving in dusty conditions.

But I’ve heard that it’s good to change them out based in calendar time as well. Like I wouldn’t want one filter in there longer than a year.

In general, I like to change my oil filter at every oil change because I can put eyes on various parts to make sure everything is ok underneath. But I’ve had a bum knee for a couple of weeks now and I’m starting to see the benefit of considering other ways to get stuff done without having to crawl around.

I average no less than 30,000 miles a year. I want the filter to stay there till spring next year. Dusty conditions are out of question unless I drive to Death Valley again in January

Is it the FJ Cruiser that has the oil filter in the engine bay? I envy those guys

A regular toyota filter will get you 10,000 miles easy. No need for a "high mileage" filter or whatever that means.

Honda technically recommends new filter every other change so that’s what I decided to do for those in my care, just getting a nicer one like the Wix XP to make myself feel better.

Since people have gotten away just fine with 10k oil changes too, I’d say the filter will be fine.

Wix XP is pretty good, but Purolator Boss is slightly better according to this review

2007-2009. 2010 was the change to underneath. Had an 07 and oil changes were super quick. Same with 2nd gen Tacos.

You would be alright with changing the filter for every other oil change. I have only once, and that was on a cross-country trip.
