How often did you come across a trail that required a locker in your 2023?

It's what I would call an underdrive, or second t-case. The 4Runner has crappy high gearing, which sucks off road. Most people "fix" that with lower differential gearing, but you can only go so far with that, and it impact everyday driving. A TacoBox, underdrive, second t-case, allows you to run everyday gearing, for everyday driving, then change the gearing when off road to something considerably lower, for considerably more torque.

If I had $15k to spend, I'd buy a locker and a TacoBox. You can keep your on road manners/mileage, while increasing your off road torque by 400%.

With $15k, you could also get a box of tacos.

Not sure if i need the locker either, but it’s been sweet when i did use it in mud and sand. I’d rather have the locker than crawl control myself.

Lol. For a rear locker you will trade in. Locker costs a thousand bucks and Eaton one is quicker than the stock Toyota one

Congrats, b/c you already have the truck that they could eventually bury you in. It’ll last 30 years, so you could hang out a while, and revisit adding a locker in say, 2054…

Regardless, based on residuals, there’s probably no wrong decision. In a year from now, the ‘24 will also have 14k miles, scratches, etc. And in 5-10 years, both will be worth their weight in solid gold…

Yup that right there. The assembly that holds the diff gears is called a third member or clamshell. Different than a traditional design where the gears are set up in the housing with the huge benefit that they can be build by someone else and you can install them in an afternoon.

I had a low-kilometer 2005 Limited, sold it and bought a new 2024 TRD ORP. I very much liked the the 4.0L in both my previous 4R Limiteds, and wanted another before they became that very rare commodity - unobtanium. I had a rear locker in my 1998 3.4L Limited, and used it extensively after the mod to enable its used in 2-wheel high. Perfect for getting out of short-term sticky or slick conditions. Still trying to figure out how to mod this 2024 one to allow the locker to be used at any time. If there is a genius out there who has figured this out, please let me know.
