Stock TRD OR, or 5100 with stock springs?

    Topic probably beat to death, so if there is a thread on point, just point me there. I searched, but could not get a good answer.

    Has anyone done this? Went from stock TRD OR with KDSS to using stock springs with 5100s all around? No lift, or minimal lift.

    if you did, was there a big difference, or is getting new springs also crucial to get an improvement? Better on road handeling is key reason, marginally better off road performence is secondary, since this is mostly a road trip rig with mild offroad usage. Think forest roads..

    It's a 2016 truck with something installed by previous owner, 2 inch fift in rear, strong rake to front. No idea what as it's been sprayed to death with undercoating paint. 98k and pretty loose handling and a kdss list, so I'm wanting to go back closer to stock.

    With no lifting, the stock springs should be fine and the 5100's x4 will improve on road handling. FYI the rear lift is probably done with rear springs so if you want to drop it to stock height, you'll need to replace said springs. If doing that, then maybe replace front springs too so then everything is fresh. I'm old school and only replace tires, shocks, etc. in sets, never individually. Good luck

    Thanks. I have take off shocks and springs from a 22 TRD OR that I'm thinking of swapping in, or taking those 22 springs and buying new 5100s and then putting that set in to replace whatever I have now. Hence the questions, but good to hear that stock springs are decent enough.

    I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish, but I think it's "ride". If that's the case, something to remember is (generally) springs hold up the weight, and shocks/struts (I call them dampers) control the ride. A lot of people don't understand that, and they think if they buy a spring that's got a spring rate of 25lbs different their going to notice the difference in ride. If you want a good ride, buy a spring that holds the vehicle at the ride height you want (holds the weight) and a damper than provides the ride you like. Ride is controlled by damper, height is controlled by the spring.

    The 5100's with stock springs will ride much better than the oem take-offs

    I’ve had my 2023 OR (no kdss) since july. I’m fairly happy with it, especially on unpaved roads/trails, but on the road it tends to wander a bit, wind, and semi's blow it around on the highway. Adding ko3’s tires (stock size) helped it a bit but i’m thinking about adding 5100 shocks with stock coils and either lift it just a little in the front to level (first notch) or just leave it stock. I was about to starting a thread on this to look at advice when this thread popped up.

    Bilstein 5100's or Eibach Sport shocks will help a lot with wandering & nose diving. If you frequent unpaved roads, the 5100's can be jarring on washboards. The Eibachs are much better with that and after having the 5100's on two previous vehicles, I now run Eibachs and like them better.

    1” Cornfed Level & 265/70/17 Cooper RTs
    I’ve had Bilsteins on a Tacoma and a Silverado and they rode great but I have no experience on these. I’m running stock suspension w/ a 1” Cornfed front leveling kit and it handles great on my ORP w/o KDSS. Feels planted with the Coopers I added and tracks straight.

    Agreed on the Eibachs. I tried both on my last 4Runner and would definitely go with those again over the 5100 (personally). Although after now coming from a Jeep with a stiff lift kit, I'm enjoying the plush stock suspension and Cornfed spacers for now, lol
