Thinking about trading

Okay people. Here’s the dilemma. I can keep my 2023 SR5 with 14000 miles, Trd skid, TRD wheels with 275/70/17 KO2s, heritage grill, some rock chips, scratches and other cosmetic issues.

Or

A new white 2024 TRD ORP.

Why? I really want a rear locker. I want whatever 4runner I have to be the vehicle I am buried in, and having one with no miles and less cosmetic issues is appealing before these are no longer available.

Input? Suggestions?

It's your money man, if you can swing it without suffering financially, do it. Don't let a bunch of random dudes on the internet dictate how you spend YOUR money.

Go for it of course if you want it and don't mind losing few thousands on it. 2024 is last year of 5th generation, you won't be able to get a new 5th gen in 2025.

 

Keep yours and add the locker if needed.

 

My advice is to look at it from a financial perspective. How much will it cost to trade in and buy new just for a locker? Plus what you already put into your 2023?

I say that because I see you live on east coast and so do I. I got the TRD because I wanted a factory locker but I've yet to meet a trail where I've needed it. It doesn't even get the exercise it should

 

14k is nothing. Have you priced a locker, say from ECGS? Might as well have all the facts.

 

Go for it! There’s enough of us SR5 drivers suffering from locker/lever envy.

 

Finances will play a role - don’t pin yourself to a wall. But other that, no reason not to do it. Especially an ORP.

 

unless you care about getting the additional offroad modes on the OR id just recommend adding the locker. Small blemishes being a concern seems kinda silly considering you want a locker to offroad, scratches and marks are gonna happen. How much of a hit are you gonna take if you trade in?

This is a legitimate dilema! If your main motivation has to do with having a cosmetically unblemished 4runner, it won’t make sense to get a new one. Unless you decide you’re done off-roading in order to keep the new one perfect. In which case, having a locker worthless to you. It’s a 4runner. It’s probably gonna get a little dinged and scratched off road. But that doesn’t get in the way of long term reliability.

The OE locker is definitely worth considering because it’s factory designed/installed, warranted, and is ready to use. However, aftermarket options are a viable alternative. An aftermarket locker one will take some effort, research, and decisions on your part, but is also probably cheaper than the costs of trading for a new 4runner.

The off-road modes aren’t worth weighing as part of your decision. I find them useless. A-trac is sufficient as far as software based traction control, and you already have that in the SR5.

The manual shift transfer case is worth considering because it doesn’t rely on a big expensive electro-mechanical 4wd actuator. This means less potential to have it fail in 10 or 15 years (it’s an expensive failure).

Basically, in my eyes it comes down to whether or not you prefer aftermarket or factory locker, whether or not you think a manual TC shifter will outlast the electro-mechanical TC actuator, and whether or not the time/money/effort put into your current SR5 is worth the trade.

Otherwise, what you have now is a brand new 4runner!

After buying TRD then you'll wish you had aftermarket front and rear lockers that can not only engage in low range but also in high range.

I did a big mistake of selling my SR5 with 3rd row and no moonroof. I wish I kept it and mod to my needs like after market front & rear lockers, nice 2.5in adjustable shock lift, 285/70R17 SL/Load C tires or maybe even 34x10.5R17D, skids, sliders,sound system like OEM audio+ / Taco tunes (something that looks factory), etc..
I careless about heritage grill / TRD Pro skid / TRD Pro wheels.

 

I’d have to hear some numbers, or more specifically, the amount you would have to kick in to fly the deal. Also, remove all the upgrades from your current 4Runner to install on the new one. A bone stock 4Runner would be more appealing to private parties than the modified one. Have the new ORP’s front clip covered with Xpel Plus PPF to offset some of the rock chips that bother you. Better just buy the new one before they are all gone and enjoy your dream truck for the next 25 years or so, do it now!

 

If you want one with a locker, why wouldn't you choose the ORP? I don't understand the question. If you were at Subway and wanted a turkey sandwich, would you order roast beef?

 

Because it's cheaper to install a locker than to trade in a year-old vehicle. Even so, I'd be tempted to go with the ORP. I like the MTM, Softex, heated seats, and heated steering wheel.

 

I own. SR5. I like everything about it except the lack of a rear locker. I could get a ORP with a locker and less wear or just keep what I have and add a locker.

 

There wasn't anything said about price in the original post, the one I quoted. If there is a price difference, that should have been stated up front.

 

Why wouldn't you get what you want?

 

Counterpoint... call up ECGS and have them ship you a pair of thirds (or a local shop to do the install if you can't) and you can have both gears and a locker for what you'll probably lose on that trade. Plus your locker will work outside of 4Lo which is useful and/or fun in a lot of scenarios.

 

The OP wants a locker. There is more than one way to achieve that. Which is better depends on how much he cares about the other features and the overall outlay.

 

OP. do you only care about the rear locker or do you want the premium features as well?

If only rear locker, get it done aftermarket or find a good deal on an OR.
If you want the premium features then yes get an ORP.

Wow, what a difference that little nugget makes.

Since I'm opining, I'd keep the SR5, buy a locker and a Taco Box; although, you're on the east coast, so maybe the Taco Box is overkill.
