I have a 2001 4runner I drove it to work turned it off came out for lunch acted like a dead battery (click click click) jump didn’t work so I thought maybe starter new starter terminals in battery now it just clunks no crank. So I have taken all belts of PS,AC,Alt to make sure something wasn’t seized (everything is good) tried turning crank by hand from dampener only about a 1/4 turn then hard stop. Pulled off timing belt cover and was able to check timing marks they all look good. One item that is in my head is the automatic transmission shifter has become a bit loose and sloppy would that in anyway cause the motor to not be able to crank by hand from dampener pulley, like the sensor thinks I am in park but I am not? (Seems like I am reaching) I think at this point I am should pull timing belt and see if a cam seized when I stopped or a valve stem broke? Thank for any help!

You need to pull the plugs to crank it by hand or it will be a bitch.

But why do you think the motor is seized? Sounds more like the new starter just isn't aligned properly.

Also, if the shifter feels loose, the neutral safety switch may be coming into play.

Going to look closer when I get home. I Did not try to hard to turn it over (with spark plugs in) and I did not double check the starter alignment as I let my son finish tightening the starter (he wants to learn). I honestly thought maybe I had jumped time as I had never heard a starter do a hard clunk (sounding much like a hammer on concrete ) I was assuming the worst.(not feeling lucky that day as it was the wife's car not my truck) going to double check starter alignment and actual fitment the new starter was not exactly the same the depth of the bendix drive was very close to the eye but the body of the starer was a inch shorter maybe wrong year?

How come you can only turn it 1/4 turn then it stops if the plugs were pulled? It should be pretty easy to turn.

The thunk is prolly hitting the flywheel and no engaging it. I had the same sound when trying to change mine on my inboard 4.3L. Its 100X more a bitch when you can't see it.

After looking the receipt and the part number I am sure it’s the wrong starter (manual trans starter) going to get the correct one then stick my head in a bucket of water for not paying closer attention. Hopefully someone will read this and have a good laugh, and not repeat my mistake.

Installed the correct starter motor turned over for about half revolution then clunk hard stop again. I removed the plugs and I can turn the motor almost full turn one way then hard stop and turn it back almost a full same stop point (close) I think next valves covers off and look for a valve that may have dropped?

Can you rotate it without the starter installed?

Otherwise...yeah, is definitely going on internally.

You should be able to keep turning.

I'm not sure on these engines but my 4.3L I had in the boat it was 2 full rotations on the crank

Very strange, you should be able to turn it over, especially with the plugs removed. A cheap bore scope should tell you fast if you're screwed. If this happened when it wasn't running it should be salvageable.
