Which wheel/tire set up is better for clearing?

I have a 2024 4Runner TRD ORP NON KDSS. Which set up is better and why?

    2” Dobinsons front lift w/UCA’s
    .5” Dobinsons rear lift
    285/70/17 KO3
17x7 +4 offset TRD PRO wheels
    NO BMC

    Or

    2” Dobinsons front lift w/UCA’s
    .5” Dobinsons rear lift
    265/70/17 KO3
    17x8.5 0 offset RRW wheels
    NO BMC

Already trimmed front fender. Is there a better set up to prevent body mount rubbing?

@Slopemaster thanks for the response. Do you think the 285/70/17 with 17x8.5 0 offset wheel will rub on body mount with a 2” front lift?

If you've already trimmed the front fenders, does that mean you already have a setup, one or the other, on your 4Runner?

@glwood54 I currently have a 3” front lift from dobinsons with 285/70/17 KO3’s 17x8.5 0 offset wheels, however, I want to go to 2” front lift. Was wondering if I can keep my same wheels and tires without body mount rubbing or if I have to downsize to 265/70/17

Maybe fill out the location in your profile. What kind of terrain?

Smaller tires will almost always clear better than larger tires.

Just installed aggressive 285/70R17's with no lift and +5 offset wheels. Only had to remove front mud flaps and minor trimming on the fender flare inside the fender well. It is not as scary as you may think it is.

@CalcityRenegade how close are you from body mount when locked? No BMC? Are you planning on lifting?

Lift will not help clear larger tires on an IFS 4runner. If you want to clear the body mount, use the stock upper control arms, and use the stock wheels.

Aftermarket UCAs will push the top pivot point backwards to gain additional caster, and by itself will probably result in some mudflap/body-mount rubbing.

I have 285/70-17s K02s Load C tires on stock OR wheels and stock UCA. I also have 2.5in of lift, but like I said, the lift doesn't play a part in clearance to the body mount. There’s probably close to an inch of space between the tire and bodymount at the closest point when tires are turned and suspension is compressed (hub in line with body mount). I trimmed a tiny bit off the bumper cover in front (maybe an inch or so).

You might get away with clearing on Pro wheels and stock UCAs, but probably not with 0 offset wheels and stock UCAs. I’d say you definitely wont clear with 0 offset and the Dobinson UCAs.

Have you considered 275/70/17 tires? Many have run those on stock suspension. You should be able to run those.

It's the combination of tire & wheel size + offset that determine rubbing on IFS front suspension. Lift does little to help, other than more room on top.

@McSpazatron is there a consensus on approximate measurement space between tire fully locked and body mount?

    @glwood54 I prefer a C rated tire and I believe 275 ko2’s only come in E rated.

The closest approach between tire and body mount doesn’t quite happen at full lock…maybe 3/4 to 4/5ths of the way to full lock. At least on stock OR wheels.

Consensus is hard because people don't always report all the variables of their setups (such as stock vs aftermarket UCA, wheels, spacers), and because there are other variables like tire tread shape, and differences in alignment specs.

So if you want to get the best idea, it’s best to compare apples to apples on as many of the particulars of a given setup. That’s why I was so specific with describing my setup when I looked at clearance with a compressed front suspension. Stock UCAs and stock OR wheels are going to get you maximum clearance. With K02s load C 285/70-17s you’ll get very close to what I pictured. But wheel width and offsets that push the tire out, or aftermarket UCAs will always reduce that amount of space compared to that.

But even with all the details, some people wheel harder than others. What I see on the driveway will change when the vehicle is in motion, pointing hard downhill, or bouncing. With the space I see in my driveway, I’ve still managed to gently kiss the mudflap in some off road situations…but not enough to pinch them and have the tire rip them off.

@McSpazatron I currently have Dobinsons tubular UCA’s which states adds caster. I have about a half inch of space between tire and body mount locked with my current 3” lift. I’m assuming the space will get smaller if I go down to 2” up front

I have no idea about the offset, but I used to run 285-70-17 with TRD Pro rims and a 3/2 spacer lift and had no rubbing issues, plus I didn’t need to remove the mud flaps. I did have the front inner fender nip and tuck per the Toyota service bulletin.

Not really, at least if you want to guarantee clearance throughout the vehicles full range of suspension movement. A true clearance check to the body mount can only be measured at the point in the suspension travel where the tire is closest to the body mount.

Lift height is only relevant when the vehicles suspension is not being compressed. Some people only care about clearance for driving on the road. In that case, you could lift higher to get clearance for bigger tires, as long as the suspension is not compressed. But stuff is gonna get ripped off when the suspension gets cycled.

To illustrate, this is what I did to verify my tires would clear the body mounts. I have 2.5 in of lift height, but I needed to make sure the tire would clear at the point the tire is closest to the mount. Which is when the suspension is compressed to the point where the hub is in line with the body mount. If the suspension is any more or less compressed, the tire will be further from the mount (because it’s round). Notice, the position of the front tire is at about the same place as it would be on an unlifted 4runner.

No rubbing at all on the cab mount, however it has yet to be under any sort of flex. Going to lift it shortly but this is for better ground clearance and ride quality as lift will not decrease rubbing on IFS. I personally know lots of guys running 285's with no BMC required.

Have not decided yet, but am thinking 2" front and 1" rear. I do not want to be too detrimental to potential suspension travel by maxing them out.
