I recently upgraded to a 2024 ORP to replace my 2006 Tacoma TRD Off Road. My Taco is in good shape with just at 200k. Runs well but I had to get the last year of the 4runner V6. I had every intention of selling off the Taco, but now have anxiety. It's been such a good truck and I've babied it over the years. CarMax has offered me $7500 but I'm thinking it's worth more to me than that, albeit sentimentally. I really dont have a need for a spare truck (I also have a company vehicle), but you never know. The insurance premium on both vehicles is pretty high though. I understand it may depreciate in value over time, but I'm just stuck in what to do. Thoughts?

If you don't need it, sell it. I never understood why anyone would be sentimental about a vehicle unless it was given to them by a deceased parent.

I recently sold my 2011 Tacoma (something I swore I'd never do) and replaced it with a 2023 SR5 Premium. It turned out to be an excellent decision for me. I loved my truck, but I find the 4R to be much more comfortable. I'm getting older and that was a big factor for me. I also was comfortable because the reliability of the 4R matches the Tacoma.

I recently sold my 2008 Highlander Sport with 130,000 miles (best looking year for Highlander) - got a trade-in quote of $6500 and decided to try and sell on my own. Put it on Craigslist for what I thought it was worth - $11,000 (new tires/brakes/alt and very clean - fully loaded) - Got several calls and it, and it sold for what I was asking to first person to look at it. It took one day/cash sale, I still kind of miss it! To get approx 30% of the original MSRP after 15 yrs is a testament to Toyota quality/resale value.IMG_8952.jpg

If you can afford to keep it , keep it ! Those 2nd gen Tacomas were fantastic , I held on to my Tacoma when I got my 24 4Runner , I love doing errands in it around town , do I need it ? No , but it has a cool factor that is unmatched and makes me smile when I see it sitting there . Life is short ,if it’s a financial burden then you won’t have any trouble selling it

Perhaps your company would consider a car allowance instead of a company car. Unless your company vehicle is significant to your job, like a construction, police or fire department type vehicle, you might be better off to have the allowance than another vehicle, thereby covering the expenses of the Tacoma. But if not, do whatever makes you happy.

Took a quick look at listings in metro Atlanta and found several ’06 Tacomas north of $12K.

I'm in the same boat as you just with an older 'replacement' vehicle. I have a 2014 Tacoma V6 4x4 with 90k miles on it. I now DD a 2004 v8 Limited 4Runner. I maybe put 1k miles on the Tacoma a year now. Want to sell it, but don't at the same time. For now it just sits in my driveway... reminds me i need to adjust the insurance on it.

My wife and i have discussed turning the Tacoma into like a dedicated camper truck, but haven't pulled any triggers on anything.

Whatever you do, as long as you're satisfied with it personally that's good enough for me.

I would try private party but it also means dealing with the public, but hopefully the BS will be minimal - could always go back to CarMax or use it for leverage elsewhere.

Too poor to buy anything now
Future payments of upkeep, taxes, tag, and insurance on the Taco might sway your mind.

With 328k miles showing on the odometer on my '02, I understand being sentimental about a vehicle.

Old Faithful has been with me for 22 years, through two marriages, two dogs, untold trips to the mountains and to the beaches, all up and down the east coast. It's taken me to places I never thought I'd get to see (northern Michigan, for instance), and it's taken me places I didn't think I'd reach (home, for instance, during 2009 and 2010 snow storms). A young college student ran a stop sign in front of me a number of years ago. I knocked her car across the intersection (very thankfully, nobody was hurt). Old Faithful dropped its grille in the road and lost a headlight in the process, but didn't even stall. A Trooper asked if I wanted a tow truck... I told him it was still running and I'd just drive it on home if that was okay with him. It was. That's been almost 10 years and 100k miles ago.

I've traveled, hauled, towed, hunted, fished, biked, and done so many other activities thanks to my '02 being able to get me there and back. Heck, I drove it to work yesterday, hauling some equipment and keeping it from being neglected.

It's kept me on the move; I've kept it well-maintained. If it laid down tomorrow, I'd certainly shed a tear. But in no way would I be justified complaining any about its service.

    - - - -

Back to the OP and practicality: mine costs me next to nothing to maintain or insure. His Taco is likely more expensive in that regard. So to the OP I'd say, do what suits you, your budget, and your storage space.

I'm currently using an '03 with < 160k miles on it as an other than daily driver, mostly to keep miles off the 4R. All I put into it (after some initial service updates) is gas, oil @ 5k, and insurance. Do you just have liability insurance coverage on yours?

    Yessir, exactly.
It's currently my workhorse -- my fishing/kayaking/towing vehicle, but it only sees use about once a week these days. The little diesel gets way better fuel mileage, and thus is the daily commuter.

At present, the new T4R just gets the shiny weekend duty. :D
