Valve adjustment

Question:
If a valve adjustment is necessary would a person know by engine performance?

At 165k on the 4.7 and I question whether one has ever been done.

Idles and runs real smooth.
Not sure i would tackle this myself, but might change my mind after hearing a quote for the job.

The peanut gallery is very generous aren't they?
If the truck is running smoothly, it may not need any valve adjustment at all, or at least for several thousand miles.

 

The haynes manual had me ask the question. Some of their service interval recommendations arent the same as found in other places so was hoping for clarification. I will wait until something seems off probably on this one. Thanks for the response.

 

When I bought mine I had an indy Toylex specialist garage do the timing belt. My Son recently bought a Tundra had them do his TB, and at that time the lead tech told me he does the valve adjustments, which involves varying thickness of bucket shims, but since both were running fine he didn't think either of our trucks had any urgency for it to be done.
