It seems from your post and others, you really can't go wrong with either! I know the foo-foo auto features sway me but I think if I want them, I could drive my wife's CX-9 around for a bit. Then I'll miss the "ruggedness" and I'll just jump back in my 4R lol

I've been down this rabbit hole a few times. It takes 2-3 full tanks of fuel before the ECU will adjust and take into account the higher octane usage. It doesn't hurt to do the battery disconnect ECU reset trick. Just make sure that you have all of your radio codes.

The nice thing about a used GX460 is that it costs less than a used 4Runner of the similar year and mileage

I went in twice about the GX. Wanted the last of the V8s from Toyota. The appeal of the V8 is nice, but it didn't offer me much more enjoyment at all. The lower seating position wasn't something I liked either. Pricing is nice, but it just wasn't an upgrade over my 4Runner. I ended up passing. Oh, new LX, they wanted $50k over sticker and he pretended he was doing me a favor. lol

It's really funny when they think they're gonna be fired for giving you such a deal of $50k over MSRP lol

I've never really understood the dislike for safety features on the newer models. At least in the 4Runner and GX you can turn them all off and you'd never know they're even there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Looked briefly at GXs. For one optioned how I wanted, it was going to be $26k more than a Limited optioned how I wanted. I know there’s 2 extra cylinders and some more power with that, but not $26k worth. Add in the dealer markups and I could have bought two Limiteds for the price of a GX

Is there a sexier looking front bumper/grill than the GX has?

The price difference between a 4Runner limited (4WD) and a GX premium is roughly $8,500. You may be able to spec them out to have a spread of $26k but that's not really a fair comparison.

But it is. A GX in the spec that I wanted was $26k more than a Limited in the spec that I wanted. Comparing a Limited that I wanted to a GX that didn’t meet what I wanted isn’t a fair comparison

That's definitely accurate! The spec one desires of each vehicle will have a huge impact on which makes sense. That, IMHO does not make one an inherently better deal. But we're all talking about opinions here so that's fair. We bought the GX because it was $100k less than the Porsche spec I wanted ;-)

All of the things shared here are great! You cannot go wrong with either vehicle. My wife and I both had 2018 SR5 premiums and then I realized we really did not need two of the same vehicles so I opted to change it up with a 2020 GX. I will say the smoothness of the GX and the power of the V8 when traveling along with the luxury feel of the interior is a big upgrade. I then went down the rabbit hole of doing a few mods to the GX and realized how great it is to take to trails and have all the fun we do in my wifes 4R. Either way you are going to have a great vehicle. Here is a pic of my GX once I got done with all of the goodies.

That's a great looking GX! You see so many in stock form so when someone lifts it with some wheels and tires, it really stands out

After much deliberation, I think I'm going to keep the 4R until Silverado 1500 ZR2s come down in price on the used market. It is my profound belief every family needs a truck lol

That's the reason why its a hard sell as used for the dealerships.
Export demands also low because of the gas consumption

    Purchasing I would get a 4Runner.

I had a friend who bought a 460 last year, had it 6 mos and traded it in a RX. He said the seats weren't comfortable, the tech was slow and he grew to hate the swing rear door.

I wish I knew this when I was shopping for my 4Runner. Before I decided to get a 5th gen, I was looking at the first gen Sequoia, and also at GX470s. I pretty much forgot that the GX460 even existed when I ended up picking up the 5th gen.

I was actually just looking at CarGurus, and similar year & mileage GX460 are going for approximately what my 4Runner's worth (, last time I checked). I wonder if I could even wrangle a straight swap. I like most things about the 4Runner, I'm just sick of driving a V6.

The V8 is much preferred over the V6. I guess if you're not too worried about resale value when you're ready to sell, the 460 might be the right choice!

Sold 2021 4Runner, got 2022 GX black line due to my lifestyle - daily driver, long trips, light (not hardcore) offroading.
Going to keep GX, so far so good.

I'm looking at a 10-13 GX, so reduced resale should help with the purchase. Not too concerned about the future, since if it's worth less I'll be less guilty about beating it up offroading haha. I have a mental block with off-roading my 4R, as it's still worth real money despite being 10 years old.

    I just saw a listing for an 11 GX with 143k for 16k. My '13 4R has 151, so it'd be a gain. Saw another 11 GX with 113k for 19k too.

I was trying to find when did the GX change from timing belt 470 to timing chain 460. Looks like you are good with that years.

For me the big find was other countries having GX with the same 4L V6. Even small islands in Asia V8s with small fuel tanks are no sell. Its awesome that our 4L V6 is available across the globe even available in new Land Cruiser 300.

Oh I didn't know that, I assumed the 4.0L would be US only. Seems like other countries prefer diesel powered vehicles over large displacement petrol engines. I enjoy watching the 4x4 content from Australia, those guys all run diesels in their Hi Lux, Prado, LC, btw.

And yes, I prefer the idea of a timing chain VS belt. The GX470 & 460 each have a list of pros and cons, I actually want to look at them both though.

I think if I were focused on off-roading, the 470 may be the way to go, but as a primary DD and highway cruiser, the 460 is probably better.

I'll give this a gratuitous 18 month bump.

I just bought a used stock 2020 GX460 "base" with 28k on it.

I wanted a "better" 4Runner - more luxury and the V-8 - while still retaining all the stuff about the 4R (OK, most of the stuff) that I loved.

Good: V8 is awesome, whoever said they can't hardly tell a difference between the 4R and the GX in acceleration is probably having a stroke because it is night and day. If you buy a certified used one, you get a 2 year unlimited mileage bumper-to-bumper warranty with it, which is essentially new car level warranty coverage. Interior comfort is better than the 4R (fuck you, Softex seats!). Off road is as good IMO. AWD on road is nice, my Runners were always part time 4WD so I like slingshotting around corners with the AWD. I like driving an inappropriate vehicle in inappropriate places / being unusual and this is still kinda rare out in the boonies. Used ones are almost exclusively stock so you know no one has been messing with them and you are buying a clean truck likely driven my some old dirty moldy money bastard who never left the pavement.

Neither good nor bad: I don't use 91, runs fine on 87 here at 1000' elevation. Barn door has advantages and disadvantages, don't really think about it as being better or worse. Roof rails are different so I need a different setup from the 4R. 18" wheels (or 20" depending on trim), but would prefer 17".

Bad: Heavy steering. Fuel economy. No hitch (although wiring and plugs are in place, same location as 4R). Worse approach and departure angles. Running boards are pretty much integral to the vehicle. Not as much aftermarket support. 3rd row blows me, I don't need it and need it gone. Invertor is only 100W. Not enough power ports. My particular model has like an eggshell white interior, dafuq? 1000 lbs heavier (allegedly) than the 4R.

Worst: no dedicated forum full of great advice and smartass mofos like this one. And NO ROLL DOWN REAR WINDOW!!!!!

Probably some other stuff I'm forgetting. Overall I really dig it. I'm looking for a lift and some oversize tires now with intent to install in a month or so.

All taken the day I bought it:

I crossed shopped a Nori Green blackline edition GX with my 4Runner. I really like the 460, it’s a more comfortable daily with a smoother powertrain imo. LC200s/LX570s are really nice but the GX is the perfect size to squeeze around in the city too.

But ultimately I chose the 4Runner because I don’t have a long commute, like the higher front bumper clearance, prefer the look/trim, easier to maintain interior for my dog, roll down rear window, and higher coolness factor (personal preference).

For someone who doesn’t “need” either, the 4Runner was the more appealing toy I also use for my short work commute. But you can’t go wrong with either.

    Agree. Also, other points:
    - 4R has 2WD and 4WD selectable. The GX is full time 4WD, which plays into heavy steering, lower MPG, and less dexterity, less turning radius, no ability to hop the front-end up soley using the rear wheels (not sure anyone can relate but curb hopping is a simple example of this).
    - V8 vs V6 is irrelevant when you consider the displacement difference is only 0.6L (a marginal increase that is mostly offset by gains in weight)
    - Premium fuel is 25% more cost +-, which could be out of sight/mind, however seeing three figures on the screen during a fillup really hits home. I don't need a reminder every week of what this country has turn to. At least with the 4R I can hope for a few more years of sub $100+ fillups.
    - 1980's track pad on the center console to remind you the OG designers of the GX retired a over a decade ago and no one had the balls to modernize or remover this waste of space.
    - There are more but it's late. Buy the lexus if this isn't enough.
