Just bought an '07 V6 with 196k on it. Going through all the major tuneups, including changing the trans fluid. Wanted to ask you guys, without any knowledge of it's previous service history, would you also replace the trans filter? Or leave it be? Thanks in advance

Note: the fluid doesn't smell bad currently, and is not overly dark. No shifting problems to speak of.

It’s just a metal mesh screen. If I’m replacing the transmission gasket, I would replace it since it’s already opened. But if I’m just replacing the fluids, nope.

The pan “filter” is just a screen. I wouldn’t plan on replacing, or cleaning it. If I was just doing the fluids, I would install an inline transmission filter on the return line from the radiator. They’re good for about 30K miles. I use one on my Tacoma, will put one on my 4Runner.
The fluid on my Tacoma went from a very dark cherry red to a red color. So, it does work.
Besides, it’s a lot easier to change an inline filter than to drop the transmission pan to mess with the internal “filter”(screen).

I have an apt Friday for a drain and fill. 2006 with 165000. Toyota service guy didnt recommend anything other than that.
Makes me a bit nervous even having it done. Just as soon would have tackled it myself but without a damn dipstick its seems too much of a mess checking the level.

That is true, I have no idea why they didn't add a dipstick... it does make it a pain.

If you have another reason to drop the pan (e.g. gasket leaking or pan rusted through), replace the filter on opportunity. Otherwise I'd leave it. I didn't replace the filter when I did a drain & fill on my 2010 last year, same A750 transmission as yours.

You'll be fine with a drain and fill. It's a good recommendation. Better to get 4ish quarts of new fluid mixed in vs. nothing at all.

Glad to hear it worked out. What did they charge, if you don’t mind sharing?
