Will a 4Runner tune have as big an impact as a Tacoma tune?

I came to the 4Runner from a 2021 Tacoma TRD OR. I loved that truck but it definitely needed the help from OTT. I had the mild/medium tune installed. Night and day difference in drivability. The improvement in drivability couldn't overcome the seat position on long drives. I also underestimated the rear seat room for the grandkids/dog.

Enter 2024 4Runner TRD ORP. A totally different platform, but an improvement in interior room, driver comfort, and drivability. This is my daily driver, grandkid /dog hauler. It is also used in the mountains to camp and get to trailheads. I am an active retiree that drives with a light foot. The driver experience after the tune in the Tacoma was dramatic.

My question...Will a tune in the 4Runner be as dramatic of a change? Has anyone come from a tuned Tacoma and decided to leave their 4Runner stock?

I have both a 3rd gen Tacoma and a 5th gen 4R. The 4R was acceptable stock, but the OTT tune was a noticeable improvement. Aside from deleting the throttle lag, there's more torque through the entire rev range.

Did the OTT Tune provide any noticeable increase in MPGs? Just curious.

MPG was the exact same for me. Slight increase in power. The biggest benefit is the throttle is predictable now.

Not who you asked, but I didn't notice any MPG improvement and I don't think they really claim that. My biggest reason to get OTT was to fix the wacky gear hunting when using traditional/conventional cruise control (Not Adaptive Cruise Control aka:ACC) and the laggy throttle response.

Big difference in drive-ability for a daily for sure. Stock parameters were meh…post OTT…much more linear in torque, throttle and power application not to mention predictable transmission operation. Best upgrade I’ve done so far, you won’t regret it.

Nope and not realistic to expect one from any aftermarket tune. Toyota's stock tune is optimized for fuel economy - that's where Toyota spent millions in development dollars for. All the undesirable behavior like throttle lag and gear hunting in the stock tune were done to maximize mpg.

This is my feeling as well. The OTT tune on the Tacoma was needed to improve drivability. I find the 4Runner to be acceptable in stock form. Sure, there is room for improvement but this drivetrain seems so much smoother with more predictable shifts. I'm considering trying OTT again. What level tune did you go with?

I got it on both the taco and the 4R. The 4R is way smoother than the Taco. I got the medium setting, but worth it I think.

Anyone out there with high miles on a tune? Never tuned and a little nervous messing with the programming.

You won't get better mileage out of a tune.

    Medium throttle with OTT9.
I've been running OTT9 for about a year. Currently at equivalent of 152k miles.

A bad tune can very quickly destroy an engine or transmission. The way to guard against this is to get a popular tune that's proven by thousands of people. OTT's tune fits that bill.
