I have been told from a local Toyota dealer that Toyota has officially discontinued PTR4300079 and if people are able to order it’s only remaining stock they have.

Does anyone know if Toyota will be offering a new premium oil filter?

I know the standard oil filter is just fine but I like the idea of a better sealing, less restricted premium oil filter. Thanks if anyone knows. I know Amsoil makes one but it’s similar in style to the one which Toyota has discontinued and I wonder now for what reason they discontinued, maybe this design is no longer seen by Toyota as properly filtering the oil? Or maybe it just didn’t sell well?

Buy the Amsoil. They made the TRD filter.

I wonder if they were discontinued because of a design flaw by Toyota? Assuming not. Not that they would officially admit this. I’ve used the Amsoil one which used to be made in USA but I’ve noticed the last two I ordered have said made in Mexico . Also noticed the black sealing adhesive covering up some of the slots that the oil is supposed to flow through with the Mexico made ones. Sad they changed the country of manufacture.

Most likely it was a disagreement about money i.e. Amsoil wanted a higher dollar amount for each filter and Toyota refused.

I’m thinking it just didn’t sell. People will buy Toyota oil just because it says Toyota but they won’t spend more on a better filter.

Is it really that much better? Like more than $35 better than this? Show me the proof. IMG_0291.jpg

    +1.

Also consider when it comes to any kind of filter, in general "better flow" and "better filtering" are mutually exclusive. Unless the engine had some known oil starvation issues (which it doesn't), I wouldn't give up filtering ability to get more flow just for bragging rights. Especially if these are the same people changing oil every 1000 miles because they are afraid the engine wont last :D

This, I will stick to paying $7 for OE filters from my local dealer. They even throw in free drain plug gaskets for me.

I have never used them, I get filters that are rated to at least 15k. Works fine

actually seems to indicate the Toyota filter did the least filtering. It just flowed better..

I’m kinda dissapointed because then I owned my Taco everybody on Tacomaworld raved about the OEM being the best, so that’s what I used. Before the Taco I tended to use mostly Bosch and Mobil1

^Does anybody know the opening pressure of the bypass valve in the 1GR filter cap? Greater filtering efficiency is wasted and even counterproductive if the higher pressure buildup causes the bypass valve to open more often.

Right. The engineers have that all figured out to work with the OEM filter. Which is why I'll spend the $7.

I’ve been using AMSOIL fluid for years, the TRD filters not only had better filtration due to the medium, but they also sealed from the top and bottom not allowing any fluid to leak past the filter. That is an issue that has been tested and proven as a failure point in all of these canister style filters that Toyota utilizes with factory standard filter inserts. We can say that it’s fine all we want, but the fact of the matter is the TRD filters with rubber rings top and bottom provide 100% seal for filtration and virtually every other Brand of car using filters like this has rubber gaskets on both end of the filter itself. Toyota decides to get rid of this thing, I confirmed with multiple dealers, and AMSOIL is selling it for 35. I can promise you that AMSOIL is not the manufacturer of the TRD filter, not sure about their own. Consider skipping the filter from AMSOIL. They literally fall apart, every single one I’ve been getting either has improperly seated red O-rings top and bottom, ripped material on the outside, in this case, and I had black glue pieces, chunks in between the pleats that when removed ripped the filter. The seam was also coming apart and looks like it was sewn together by a three-year-old, literally pieces of plastic falling into my hand. I had to go to Walmart to get some fram filter. I don’t know what I will do going forward, I know some dealers in Saudi Arabia stocked these, I will order a large batch if I can and post here. Literally created an account just to tell folks to stop ordering, AMSOIL refunded me for the last two that I ordered. They make fluids - not filters, to my knowledge. If you can’t find or order one with rubber seals top and bottom with metal cap plates on both ends, stick with Walmart Fram

You are correct the newer Amsoil ones are not the same…these are made in Mexico. However, the older Amsoil ones were in fact made by the same manufacturer (made in the USA) that the TRD ones were…both were of high quality. However, the newer Amsoil ones are HORRIBLE! I agree with you about the newer ones and have seen the same flaws you point out. Should you find a good replacement, not the stock Toyota one, please let us know.

Or we finally stop with these messy canister filters and convert to commonly available 2 min changeable screw ons. I have avoided this baxter style adapter as I was worried that pump flow wouldn’t be the same as the spring in the OEM housing has a certain amount of pressure that allows for flow
    Thoughts?

So apparently Baxter accounted for this with a spring loaded setup as well, using the same viton style gasket rubber that Toyota used for TRD as described on their Japan parts site
    Liking it so far..

Sadly the newer Royal Purple filters are made in Mexico by whomever makes the new horrible Amsoil ones. Both brands used to be made in USA.

So looks like I’ll be looking at the filter conversion kit most likely then… The filter media is really garbage to be honest, or we just go with the cheap Toyota filters and stop worrying about it

I've been curious about that adapter but:
    1) The price
    2) I hesitate to deviate too much from Toyota engineering
    3) The price...

It's a solution for something that isn't a problem. Plus I don't think you can run the OEM skid with it.
