This has to be a needle bearing right?

Ya, ours was worse after not many miles... wait till you put the bushing in and test it in the same way.. night and day difference.

Thanks. It is at 59,500 miles. I noticed the cyclical droning starting about 1,500 miles ago and it's getting louder. Will see if I can convince the dealer to warrantee it tomorrow.

It is truly amazing how many thousands of complaints I've seen on reddit, Tacomaworld, here, etc. of people having to fix this, often multiple times.

It is also wild that all those people buy a bushing from some dude on the east coast and slap it in their car. Good for him. The world is an odd place.

A lot longer than the needle bearing.

There isn't much to wear or break as long as fluid is good. Or metal gets in there somehow but then you probably got bigger problems.

I see the question has been answered, but when I talked to them they said, "400-500,000 miles", Buy the tools, and get it done. The install is not difficult at all.

Yes. We're still waiting for that elusive YT video by @MyWyfsRnnr - all myths will be dispelled at that time! :D

There are several videos out there detailing the process. Search ECGS bushing install.

I hope he's not waiting for one that goes easy to post. My nightmare is that he's already recorded several that didn't pass muster due to problems along the way. The basic elements of my nightmare are: the removal tool falling back into the clamshell, the removal tool endlessly slipping off the needle bearing, the bushing getting stuck at an angle halfway in because it wasn't started straight, and the bushing going in too far.

I did my ECGS bushing and narrowed it down to 2 or 3 YouTube videos and watched them every day for a couple weeks. Can't remember which 2 or 3 but it helped immensely. Took me about 4 hours taking my time.

I had the same worries because the videos always tell you to watch out.

Honestly once you dig into its there is nothing to worry about. There is no way the tool can drop back into the housing if you shove plastic or a small towel in the diff. The tool won't come off. Its snug. I had to tap mine in it wouldn't go in just by pushing.

The bearing cannot go in to far and pretty much impossible if you get their tool. The tool will stop you.

The hardest part(s) since I tried solo was removing and putting back the cv. Its easier if someone can push pull while you tap it and it will pop right in/out.

I recorded it all I just have not found time to make it small enough for YouTube to accept. @backpacker, gotta put something in the diff so nothing falls in! That will complicate the job immediately! Sorry you had an issue with that. The video I shot just used regular hand tools not even some of the other tricks I do. I will work on it some more and try to get something out! Life is busy and got to many irons in the fire right now! Haha!

The senior Toyota tech assures me it is not the needle bearing - there's no cyclical noise at all - and he's not interested in fixing it. Hmm.

How does that bushing not increase resistance and possibly leave metal particles from wear in the dif?

i thought that as well, but it might be similar to a cam or connecting road bearing.

    I assumed this as well.

If you look at the needle bearing it has a bunch of thing "needle" rollers with less surface area and there is play. And if you look how they are held in the bearing looks pretty sketch to me. Makes no sense why it was even like that to start.

Per the description on their website, "Sintered PTFE Bushing, metal backed, bronze inlaid, PTFE coated ".
Not sure that I ever read about a problem with metal getting in there from wear and causing a problem. I would think that waiting too long to change it out (needle bearing) would wear more where it rides on the CV. I'm probably in that group. Would be interesting to see the runout on a new CV versus a CV that was run for many miles with the needle bearing noise.
