2013 4Runner oil leak

I pulled one out of my wifes runner, supposively only had maybe 4000 miles on it since dealer change.. the filter was so black it looked like carbon...not brown.. black. Oil itself on dumping..was cleaner. I am not sure its ever been changed. It sure doesnt look like any of the filters ive pulled out of mine before. This is with dealer oil and with my own oil.

 

To secure the tube, the tabs should be bent down some. An OEM one will come w/ tabs bent to secure the tube from possible rotation.

 

Yep they're bent down. I just pried a little to allow the 2 hold down metal tabs to slip passed the hold down plastic tabs.

 

Ok, I tried to remove mine without bending them up and it was a definite no-go for me.
Ok, I’ve beat this horse long enough.

 

I took long #1 straight blade screw driver, pried A little on the one "hold down tab" & got it to pop up, then did the same to the adjacent tab. Bingo they are now both free, slide the stand pipe towards their direction & the other 2 are free to remove. NO bending fatigue on the metal tabs. They dont care. Thats why i do all my oil changes becuase I dont trust anyone with my car. Seen too much stupid shit done in the past 35 years of driving by careless techs, etc.

 

There’s a reason that this happens at dealers and quick lube places. It’s a “strategic” lack of supervision. The boss sets the expectations for what should be done, including how quickly. If the allowed completion time is unreasonable to account for differences in time between different cars , and the consequences for taking too much time are motivating enough, then it’s natural for even a good tech to take shortcuts.

As long as the boss doesn’t supervise closely enough to notice the shortcuts, he’ll retain the right to blame the tech whenever a complaint is made. If he were to supervise sufficiently, he might notice that times might need to be adjusted, or he might notice training needs to improve, or notice that some of the oil techs should explore other employment options. All that is hard work, so it’s easier to adjust how closely they oversee the work.

Customers rarely will notice the shortcuts, and the ones that do would rather not return than to make a complaint. When the odd complaint get’s through, and they get backed into a corner, they get to “investigate” and find the tech that skipped the filter.

They wouldn’t be wrong to blame the tech…after all, they skipped the work. But it’s hard to hold a boss accountable for systemic problems like this. Customers could, but these shortcuts persist because they know most customers won’t notice, and most that will notices simply would rather not return than take time to complain (or risk the shop screwing something up the second time around).

Good shops may charge more because often it costs more to run a good shop.

Worse case scenario is that I make the 2 hour drive.

 

Is there a trick to getting the holes in the skid plate to line up?

 

unless you put studs in, you’ll always fight with it. Even with my TRD skid plate I only land it 1 out 3 tries.

 

There is. After you put the metal tabs in the front in, put the rear bolts in loosely and then adjust the front holes to align and tighten the front bolts( you will move the skid plate slightly out) and then tighten the rear. Patience is the key.
