Chainsaw for Long Forest Roads?

I have a couple recommendations plus a third curve ball...

I got one of these folding saw for smaller branches. It's bad ass.

And an Echo electric chain saw. Empty the oil. Most saws leak. And with electric you don't have to carry gas. I bring extra batteries.

And then....for forest roads I bring my millwaukee M18 Hedger and extra batteries. I've used the shit out of this thing on trails that would have pin striped the shit out of my 4Runner.

 

I have a manual Silky saw as well, totally the best manual saw by far.

I also have a DeWalt 20v chainsaw which is awsome and has tons of torque to cut through any tree. Surprisingly it doesn't leak bar oil if not over filled.

 

I had a millwaukee chainsaw that leaked oil like it had a phobia of it. I took it apart and replaced o rings and anything I could but eventually just gave it away.

The echo doesn't seem to leak as long as it's not full.

 

I still love my Silky Katanaboy 500. The price is a little ridiculous now, but it cuts amazingly well!

My Husqvarna leaks oil, so I try not to put it away full. Still a great little saw!

 

I saw the PF video but what I like about Silky that wasn't really shown is the insane durability. I bought a BigBoy 6 years ago with a lot of use prepping firewood and clearing trails and have never sharpened the thing. Still cuts nearly as good as when new.

If I'm on a forest trail and expect a ton of clearing large green trees then I'll take the Stihl but 99% of the time, the Silky is enough without the extra weight and cargo that comes with the saw and PPE.

Typically I'm lead car with GPS maps downloaded. I'm always jumping out woth the Silky cutting this branch and that. Rarely ever the chainsaw. The Silky does work.

Same here! People are always impressed with how fast it cuts. I bought on a recommendation from a guy on Tacomaworld who hasn't steered me wrong yet.

 

Bought mine because a lot of people from the TV show Alone had one or an even larger version. And then there was rave reviews everywhere. Yeah man cuts so dang fast.

 

I'm sorry man. I've seen a lot of posts of people complaining about theirs so I changed to the echo.

If it has a problem just empty the oil every time or only put a little in at a time.

 

I carry a bacho laplander, I know it's small, but it's already saved my ass on a forest road, literally had a tree fallen blocking the whole thing...I cut over half, then used a 20ft tow strap and snapped the tree pulled it off to the side. Even recorded myself doing most of it cuz I was excited to use my stuff lol

 

I would only be using this around the house. I don't go major off roading W.4Runner. That's for my New Polaris Sportsman 570 Trail EPS!

 

Yeah, the Katanaboy is pretty pretty big. I think the blade is .5 meters long.

In the coal mine, (before longwalls), we used bow saws to cut timbers. We'd get into 8 ft of height sometimes, (high coal!), and since props had to have so much diameter diameter per length some of those props were 11-12 " thick. We set 16 in every lift. The bow saw handled them.

 

I carry the Laplander while hiking. I love it.

 

She isn't the best saw out there, but it still gets the job done lol

 

I also now have a Silky Big Boy and no, the Laplander is not nearly as fast or sharp, but it's tough and I don't have to be worried about snapping the blade when I cave man it.

All I can say is check your local laws. I believe in derpifornia downed stuff is fine but just hanging is a no go.

 

What about a battery power reciprocating saw? It takes up less room than a chainsaw, is generally safer to use, and there’s no issue with bar oil. 12 inch blades are ubiquitous, and Fein even offers a 24” blade for their reciprocating saw.

I suppose if one already has a Sawzall it makes really good sense. I'm not sure how they hold up against an electric chainsaw, though.

 

Thought the same thing. You could cut wood or metal. I have a Milwaukee fuel hacksaw. Took it out when I was cutting firewood with a chainsaw to see how it would perform.
8 inches or less was good. Problem with the Milwaukee Hacksaw is it's not tough enough. Plastic spacers on the inside between the motor and the frame broke.

 

I ended up carrying a Katanaboy 500, Fiskars X27 axe, Barnel loppers for pin stripers, also have a winch. If it's to big for that I just find another route. Also fabricated a Tomcat for metal detecting but comes in handy for chopping, prying or digging in hard ground.

Since we just talked about this, I was going out to hike today, and there was atleast 5 downed trees, so i used my Laplander, 4RUNNER, and tow strap.. it took forever, but I got them all cleared

 

Dewalt chainsaw is probably the best bet.

 

Dewalt makes great power tools! Between them and Makita, it's almost a coin toss for the #2 spot behind Milwaukee.

 

Nice job! The Silky Big Boy stays in my winter duffel bag kit for stuff like this. Does your tow strap have metal hooks?

 

This has been in the Amazon cart for a little while now. I have a ton of Ryobi batteries so I'll likely pull the trigger on this one before my next trip to the Ozarks/ Ouachita.
First trip there I had to turn around multiple times due to fallen trees. Didn't want to break out the hand saw.

 

Check Home Depot, because that is overpriced for what it is. You can get a 10" brushless for less than that, or a 12" brushless for a little more.

Or an 8" brushless for a bit less, or a 6" for a lot less (although that's probably no better than a handsaw).
