So I just got 4 sets of the Cooper Road Trail AT on 17” TRD Pro wheels, my spare I imagine is the 20” wheels and a full size limited edition spare tire

question, I see people getting 5th tire for their spare identical to the 4 main tires they are driving on. So, if I follow this and get a spare with Cooper AT tire and trd pro 17” wheel it seems like a bit pricey for a spare

Does anyone just get a a cheap no name AT tire and cheap 17” wheel to use for spare? figure if I get a puncture and have to use the spare it would only be used temporarily until I get to a tire shop to fix or replace the main damaged tire.

There is always someone selling stock wheels. I was able to convince someone to split and sell them individually, and paid $100 for a spare wheel. Then I went to all of my local tire places and found a used pizza cutter (for $30) roughly the same diameter as my other tires. I've found that to be a cheap middle ground until I can afford a full new tire, and it also fits nicely under the vehicle until I can get a new rear bumper with tire carrier.

On my rig, I have 5 BFG KO2’s all on TRD OR wheels. I use a 5 tire rotation so all tires should wear out at about the same time and will get replaced with 5 matching tires.

This makes sense to me as I will always have a matching spare that is relatively new vs one that has aged and needs replacement due to age. Also, when it’s time to replace tires and if I want a different brand or size, I’ll get a matching spare without sacrificing one with lots of tread left…

    Cheers,
    Bob

You could look for someone selling oem wheels for cheap, or even a steelie. I actually gave my spare (steelie) to someone when I bought aftermarket wheels.

Or, bite the bullet and buy another wheel. If you do this, you could do a 5 wheel rotation like @BobbyB .

I don't know if I'd cheap out too much on a spare.

My spare matches regular tires. If I get a flat on the trail, I want a real AT tire to get me out of there. After this set, I'm going to get a matching wheel and switch to a 5-tire rotation.

you could get the same size tire, to fit the 20" spare so you dont have to buy a new wheel.
    OR
you could buy one off ebay
    OR
you could leave it how it is like 99.6% of the other people on the road.

If you choose to do step 1 use this calculator and put in your current 17" wheel tire size and find the 20" tire that matches the overall diameter so your overall diameter will match. Like for example if your tires are 265/70-17 = 31.6" you would figure out which tire matches it which is a 265/55-20 = 31.5" so you would theoretically have the exact same overall diameter on the 20" wheel as your spare if you just want the tire to match your new set on the ground.

I prefer matching wheels so that you can rotate all 5.

OP, I just bought a set of 4 TRD Off Road wheels, and I put the Cooper Discoverer Road+Trail 265/70-17 tires on them. I was gonna just leave the stock 20" spare, but I found another TRD OR 17" wheel, and I'm having another Cooper Road+Trail put on it tomorrow. I figured that I spent a lot of money on this new 4Runner, so I might as well spend a tiny bit more in order to have a matching spare so I can do a 5-wheel rotation. Plus, if I have a flat, I can use the spare without wondering whether there is a tiny bit of difference in circumference that might be hard on the full-time 4wd of the Limited model.
