I agree. For about 5 - 9k more you can get the Lexus 550 Overland Trail Plus; their top model. It starts at $77k according to Lexus' website. The down side to it is; you can ONLY use premium fuel. Not a huge negative, but something to consider.

When you add all of your posts together, it sounds like you're trying to convince yourself that you don't want one.

But it's obvious that you really do.

People don't put this much time and effort into not wanting something.

There's a lot of debating about that. TRD Jon just posted a video about his LC using unleaded. He stated that the manual contradicts the gas cap. The manual said it can operate on 87 octane. TRD Jon also pointed out it is the exact same engine that the new Tacoma uses, and it runs on 87 octane.

That forum is obnoxious to read with all the ads everywhere but it sounds like the only thing that is confirmed is the engines sound funny and dealer torn one apart without knowing the problem.

Well Colonel I just want to thank you for sharing all of your thoughtful and detailed comments about your new vehicle. I'm interested in a LC (1958) or 6th Gen 4R as a replacement for my 5th Gen and your candid comments are helpful. Please keep sharing your insights.

    Where does it say that?

I dunno man. I was just repeating what TRD Jon said in his video. I didn't verify it. I guess I should have before repeating it. Now I look bad. Please don't put me in the cone of shame!

This is why I don't trust Youtubers.

Not your fault. I was curious, because the salesman that showed me one didn't even know about the fuel requirements. I showed him the gas cap, but never verified with the manual.

After reading your post, I downloaded the owner's manual to see what it really says.

Yup. You caught me… haha. Except I could have purchased one many times by now and have chosen not to for all the reasons plainly stated. If you aspire to own one buddy, go get one… it’s definitely not for me as it’s a big disappointment wrapped in a neat looking package but lacking any real substance.

You may have glossed over this. It was a long post - The noise diagnostic eventually resulted in Toyota sending out specialist to examine the opened engine. Now they plan to replace the engine block. ETA 1yr due to parts shortage.

Guy did a test - all other 250s on the lot exhibit the same noise.

You said they all have engine issues. I don't know that a weird noise is really an engine issue. And, if they all have engine issues, why didn't the people replying to the post all have the same "issue"?

    Easy - The transitive property.

    A = B, B = C, therefore A = C

noise diagnosis resulted in discovery by dealer and Toyota to replace engine block, due to findings of metal shavings. All other 250s in the lot had same odd noise. Thus the sampled 250s likely need their engine block replaced, if they were brought in for inspection.

the noise itself did not result in warning lights. Very possible many owners are not sensitive to this problem happening to the car.

I will bet you, this will eventually snowball into the tundra issue. Replacement engine for everyone.

    Alright.

If you're right, and all Landcruiser engines fail or need replacement, I will admit that I was wrong.

But, if this turns out to be an isolated incident, will you admit that you were wrong?

I will wait until the issue pops up in more than one vehicle before I believe it, personally. I also don't believe that a weird noise is proof of an issue.

Have you considered the possibility that the guy posting could have been an idiot? Or, do you really believe that he can diagnose a catastrophic engine issue by hearing a noise?

Also, why aren't our members having this problem if the issue exists in all of them?

Edit: also, you never answered the question..

"if they all have engine issues, why didn't the people replying to the post all have the same "issue"?"

You are not comprehending the situation. That LC owner didn’t make the diagnosis. Dealer and Toyota decided to replace engine block after the engine noise was traced to cyl 1.

The only symptom so far is strange noise while engine is cold. Many owners are oblivious to that if they are not sensitive to the noise. They must firstly detect the sound before bringing it in for inspection.

I am willing to bet, with more mileage, the symptom will become much more catastrophic

The dealer opened up every engine on the lot and found the same issue with cylinder #1?

Or are we basing it on the assumption that a weird noise indicates the same issues?

Yes the later via the transitive property. This is how the tundra engine issue started. Fanboys dismissing individual findings as systemic, despite all the objective facts. The owners in that LC thread are all very nervous now. They hear the same noise in their engines.

where there is smoke, there is fire.

    So, assumptions, then?

Like I said, I'll admit that I'm wrong, if and when I'm proven wrong.

I'm trying to stay somewhat positive here. But, I'll admit that things look bad right now.

Between Tundra engines, Tacoma transmissions, and the possibility of catastrophic engine issues in the new LC, things look really bad for Toyota right now.

These issues with shavings being left inside of engines are just pathetic. What is happening with their quality control?

I hope the OP and others don't have these problems.

Do you? Or do you selectively toggle between referencing facts in car magazines and then soliciting anecdotal (sample size 1-2) opinions depending on whether it supports your assertions? YouTube has credible folks, absolute kooks and everything in between, but at least it’s got a much larger sample size and shot at being normally distributed.

    Yes, I do.

If you're referring to our conversation about the 4Runner VS Landcruiser acceleration, I believe I did admit that the LC is a few tenths of a second slower than the 5th gen 4Runner, according to one publication.

You can look back through plenty of threads on this forum where I've eaten crow, if you really want.

As far as anecdotal opinions, I believe I might have pointed out that my 4th gen felt quicker while actually being slower than my 5th gen.

According to the “majority” of the major publications in instrumented (not estimated extrapolated on the basis of power to weight) tests. I mean the fact that we can even put them in the same ballpark is ridiculous…. “But hey man it’s not all about acceleration, it’s a truck…” I’m aware…. But the 5th Gen is a 15 year old platform with a 5 speed transmission that literally even all its beloved owners admit is pokey if not outright slow. You never admitted it’s pretty disappointing that’s the case and quite unexpected.

    You wouldn't put a 7.7 second 0-60 in the same ballpark as a 7.5 second 0-60?

    Re-read what I wrote. I would and that’s sad… for the new 2024 Landcruiser.
