Coming up on my 60k maintenance interval so I got another thread going regarding coolant drain & fills. Here’s one on transmission fluid. How many of you are dropping the transmission pan with transmission fluid drain & fills? Is draining a bit more and cleaning the magnets worth breaking that factory seal around the pan? I do intend to stay on top of the 60k changes. Might even bump it down to 50k without dropping the pan.

I don't think its worth it personally. You don't get much extra fluid out of the system by dropping the pan.

Drain and fill is the way.

When should you change the transmission filter on these?

FWIW highly regarded Mr. Car Care Nut (Toyota Master Tech.) on YouTube says it’s not necessary with 60k drain & fill intervals.

It’s hardly a filter. Just a big metal screen. Similar to the screen filter on your engine's oil pickup tube.

I don’t feel the need to change it at all

In the distant future, the factory FIPG seal will leak, usually by rust jacking on the steel pan flange. You can drop the pan and replace the filter then. No need to do it sooner.

FIPG “Factory Installed Pan Gasket”? California truck here so that rust might be in the very distant future. Nonetheless I’ll leave well enough alone and just do a simple drain & fill at 55k. No need to be more invasive than necessary I’m hearing. Thanks for the input everyone.

^FIPG - formed in-place gasket. It's a liquid gasket that is typically robotically injected onto the pan at the factory. After installation, the liquid cures to a solid.

No fuck that. The gasket looks abit tricky due to size. I am not sure theres great value in dropping the pan, cleaning magnets or filter. Better to just drain and fill, but use the temp and overflow plug method to ensure correct level on volume. Youll need scan tool as the thermocouples or IR gun seem a few degrees off in readings and when the temp window is so narrow for volume check..use the right scan gauge to check it.

I flush using the internal pump and the bucket method.

Agree, if that screen ever gets clogged enough to need replacing it's going to be from bits of your trans, so a fluid service is the least of your worries.

Drain and fill only unless you’re having issues.

    How is this done?
How much fluid does it get out compared to the usual draining?

Not needed and especially if you live in rusty land. Break a bolt off and your in for a pain in the rear. Drain and fill, done.
