4th gen, looking to disconnect or disable the gps. Is it as simple as pulling a fuse or do i have to rip the pioneer system out of the dash(probably a pain and perhaps some broken tabs on my part) and unplug the sensor.. it doesnt seem like just turning it off is an option when i go through the settings.

Depending on your motivation, you probably want to look at some of the DCM disconnection threads.

It looks like you're out of the woods there. I thought it came earlier, but it was mid-5th gen.

The first decade or so of 5th gen’s I believe are dependent on a since-shut-down 3G network so no worries there anymore.

I opted to take the dash apart and unplug the gps antenea from the back of the stereo. Went pretty smooth. Was very surprised to see a bunch of audio cables back there that appear were never connected to anything, also a small black box plugged into a connector under the steering wheel pastic cover.. not sure what thats all about.

On the top rear of the runner I have two magnet stuck sensors.. i know one is the gps, the other? Maybe satalite radio?

What GPS are you disconnecting and why? If you don’t mind sharing.

Ackshually GPS doesn't emit radiation at the receiving end.

It works by receiving multiple signals from multiple satellites, those satellites are - put simply - emitting the time and their location.

GPS receivers take those signals and then calculate it's location. It's fascinating.

They can also be used to track you realtime so that is enough for me. Doomsday shelter, nah they will be tombs for all who put faith in them.

How? You don't have a DCM, so what device is collecting the data and how is it being transmitted from your vehicle?

Certain navigation apps on your phone can detect when you park so for sure they can detect when you drive.

That’s why they need the cellular connection to upload metrics and whatnot. I’m all for stemming the data leakage where we can though. I’m glad you’re willing to put in the effort to stop or slow down everything about us being vacuumed up.

Can’t beat a Garmin GPS for utility vs. privacy though since GPS itself is one-way - as long as the authorities or other interested party doesn’t get their hands on it or your vehicle physically. (assuming it has pertinent data saved and of course all up to your use case and tolerance)

I agree on tombs, the best apocalypse plan is a community!

Cell providers are the weakest link since they’re the most lax and always gave a rough idea where you are just from what towers you’re connected to. (and the idea becomes less rough with triangulation)

Those navigation apps are likely detecting when your car bluetooth/projection connection ends and saving that location as where you parked. Perhaps after navigation to a destination has ended as well.

The OS and mapping service of the phone used too makes a difference but that’s definitely getting way into the weeds.

Old phone without all the newest jazz. You must be one of those "i dont need privacy because i have nothing to hide"types.

Do you have a picture you could post of these magnetic sensor(s). That does sound OEM, possibly added on at some time in its life.

While that is true I have nothing to hide.

I also know what I can control and what I can't control. You are on the internet I hope you are doing this from your library or something so they don't track you.

Putting a post on 4runners.com =/= deciding to do nothing about giving away my exact vehicle's coordinates and metrics 24/7.

This observation is a general one and has nothing to do with you. “I have nothing to hide” assumes that all with access have noble intentions, and that’s just not true, even talking about government agencies sworn to uphold constitutional protections.

To make you feel better. IDGAF if they hear me talking about government agencies hearing me either.

Listen to me all you want.

All these people come ONLINE. Repeat ONLINE concerned about being tracked etc. Like they don't know WTF you are going. If they want to know what you are doing they will know what you are doing. You will not stop it.

So again control what you can control. I got better shit to enjoy than worry about stuff like this.
