    Hi,

New 2024 4 Runner SR5. I was wondering about roof bags. For a short trip in which the bag will be removed when I get there:

    1. If the weight is reasonable can the roof bag simply be rested on the roof and lashed to the two rails on the roof?

    2. If the answer is yes, do you have any recommendations for such a bag?

    Thanks,

    John

It can rest on the roof, I have always tried to not do that, but for a little weight it’s ok.

I have a Sherpa bag and one I got at Wally World.

Are you saying a bag scratches it? When I looked on Amazon, a lot of them come with roof pads.
    Thanks,
    John

I run a roof bag on occasion. I forget the brand but it was a name brand waterproof model. Whatever you choose pack your contents In contractor bags. They all leak.

Will you be using the oem rack or do you have a basket you plan on using? That might make the difference in what you choose with regards to strap layout, size, shape.

It'll definitely give it small scratches and wear spots over time as dirt and whatever works its way underneath. It all depends now much you want to use it

Yeah. It will scratch and rub. There is a lot more vibrating and movement than you think going on up there.

The OEM rack (two rails that come with it).

Yes, you can lay a pad under the cargo bag to help prevent scratching the paint on your roof, but you really have to limit the weight. I don’t have any recommendations on a cargo bag.

I used to use a roof bag, until I got a rear hitch cargo carrier which makes life so much easier…
Getting stuff down from the roof can be dangerous when you’re old like me.

Plus, you get up to 500 lbs

Did you have any sort of cross bar?
We cut our own Xmas tree and I made the mistake of thinking I could just cinch it down real tight but it wanted to slide around fore and aft pretty badly. I had to quick jerry rig something with wire and scrap wood. Worked but was not pretty. I got some cross rails after that mis-adventure...

Yes, I replaced the 2 factory crossbars with 4 LFD crossbars.

Now I have no crossbars because I don’t like carrying anything on the room anymore.

Yeah I liked their bars but ended up with some from Victory 4X4 which are also very nice. I had no factory bars.
I like the hitch carrier too. I had forgotten about those.

Took the crossbars off. Too late to return them. There is no roof bag that fits in between the crossbars even when they are spread out as far as you can spread them out. "Small" Bag i bought will go right on the provided roof protector non skid sheet that came with it.

The bag should have fit on the rails. The issue then becomes the bag sagging and touching the roof any ways. I would use some camp chairs in the bag to try to avoid this.

    good luck.
