    Hi,

I have a 2016 4runner Trail with Bilstein struts on the front and it's lifted. The springs on them have cracked and I'm having trouble finding replacement struts based on the part number. Part number is PTR13-89160-LF and PTR13-89160-RF. There is also "TRD" on the sticker that the part number is on.

Check with the dealer if you want to replace with the same. Those PNs probably won't cross-reference with anything aftermarket. What kind of driving are you doing to crack springs? Very rare failure. Pictures always help here. When you say it's lifted, how so? Spacers?

Driving around Mountain roads in Colorado cracked them a few weeks ago while I was out there.

I don't know much about suspensions and lift. I bought it from a Toyota dealer and it was lifted when I bought it.

When I requested pictures, I meant of the front suspension. It looks like you might have spacers, but it's hard to tell from this photo. Let's see what you've got, then come up with a plan of action. While you're at it, take a picture of the rear springs as well. I suspect the same.

I'll see what I can do. Vehicle (and the suspension) has 140k miles on it currently.

I took a trip out to colorado recently and experiences some of the county “roads”. I can completely understand the possibility of cracking springs lol. I spent a few hours on county roads that are part of the alpine loop between engineer pass from ouray to Lake City and back over Cinnamon Pass to Silverton. Horrible surfaces made up of unevenly spaced sharp football sized rocks in every orientation. I was at 20psi on the tires, and at 5mph my 4runner sounded like it was going shake to pieces.

She still runs good as good as ever though, and a post-trip inspection didn’t reveal any issues. But I should probably take a closer look at the springs to make sure lol.

Doing some research I'm finding the part number listed above is strut only. I'm looking to replace strut and spring. Full assembly appears to be part number PTR13-89161 LF and RF

If the sticker says TRD on the current bilsteins, I think the Pro trim level had those as OE equipment. Maybe toyota no longer sells these as replacement parts. It may be easier to get something equivalent from Bilstein as aftermarket.

If the suspension has 140k miles on it, it's time to replace it anyway.

Bilstein 5100 or equivalent with an Old Man Emu spring?

At 140 I would replace front and rear. FYI, I just installed 6112s front/rear, love the ride and the price. Cracked springs, thats crazy, never heard of that.

Not the first time I've done that. Mountain roads are hard on vehicles and I live in area that salts the roads in winter, so that probably doesn't help. Broke a few leaf springs on previous trucks driving around mountain roads at one time.

So complete assembly of Bilstein strut and spring is coming in at about $550/each for part number PTR13-89161. Is that reasonable?

Will the Bilstein 6112s work since my 4runner is lifted?

That sounds about right for price, and forgot to mention that I did install upper control arms with my 6112 lift so that it can be properly aligned. All I know is, I went from Bilstein 5100s to Bilstein 6112s and the ride on and off road is 5xs better. Im not sure what you already have in your rig but if you have upper control arms already and a true suspension lift the Bilstein struts should replace what you have. Maybe consult a suspension professional to make sure you are buying the correct set up. I think you will find that you will get the most bang for your buck with the Bilstein 6112s. You may have to replace the rear springs also if you replace the rear shocks but again you need to have a good suspension person check it out.

Due to financial constraints at the moment I'm just looking to replace the fronts.

Checking around on part number PTR13-89161, I'm being told parts are on back order and there is not a definitive date as to when they will be available to ship.

Yes, 5160s with reservoirs in the back and “Elevate” rear coil springs for a 2” lift. yes I understand, I think you can just do the front but again, Im not an expert on suspension. I am still shocked at the ride difference of 5100s vs 6112s. My old 5100s had 75,000 miles when I replaced them. I also put duro bump stops front and rear and “Elevate” chromoly upper control arms. I paid 300.00each for the 5160s in the rear.

    $215 OME front coils
    $215 OME rear coils
Have you considered used, take-offs? Or new:

    OME springs are $215/pair.
    Bilstein 5100 are $325/pair.

So, $550 for the fronts, new.

I'm gonna go new. I found this. I think it will work for my lifted 4runner??? Appears you can put the circlip in the desired setting from .7" to 3" lift.

Exactly. Nicer than I would use, but exactly how it works.

I think you may just be able to replace the coils with bilstein 6112 coils and be done with it. Id say contact bilstein to clarify

Yes, the 6112s are adjustable. And yes new is best. Good choice

With a 140k on the vehicle it's time to replace more than just the coil.

How does one measure how much lift I have? I assume stock is certain measurement from ground to fender well? If so what is that measurement?

Ground to fender well will change with tire brand and height. You should measure from two fixed points below and above the spring, on the vehicle.

Agree. Ive had great results with the 6112s on 3 of my 4runners.Nice large damper, corrects lean and its a closed system..
Just beware that the settings are not accurate so you might choose the one below your choice..

@prj71 So, go measure, with pics, and someone on the forum can do the same.

Also, you can change the clip height to change the height. Just order it at what you think it is, and when it comes in, if it's off, change it.

Shock surplus should be able to assist with that measurement.

I tried their online chat feature and they weren't very helpful. They did say that the circlip location can't be changed once it's installed on the vehicle which I why I want to figure out the correct location before ordering.

Measure from the center of your hub to the bottom of the fender on all 4 corners. Compare that to stock height measurements (20" in the front and 22" in the rear).

Really? thats a bummer. Sorry I cant be more helpful. I dont even know where my clip position is but I think its maxed out. I would look but my runner is in the shop for a check engine light.

If you look at the link I posted above, the circlip location choices range from .7" to 3" lift. I just want to get it right before ordering.
