So i hit a small deer and the front bumper and and one fog light got busted, did a claim took it to the local collision shop and they ordered the parts with no eta it's been a month now still no parts and they can't tell me when they will get the parts they have some but not all.

Is that normal? Because the 5th gen has been around since 2010 so there should be a lot of parts floating around.

I call them every week and ask and so does the insurance guy. I've used them before never had a issue. They actually do good work and match the paint really good.

No, that doesn't seem normal to me. I hit a deer last October, and had around $5K in damage. The body shop had it for less than 2 weeks, and that included ordering a new bumper cover, fender, fog lights, grill, and headlights, among other things.

I had a similar incident last year with minimal front bumper damage. Hit a deer the beginning of June and the repair wasn’t completed until the end of August.

What was there excuse? It's very frustrating considering the damage is minimal and i find it hard to believe that the parts are not easy to get seeing how it's been around since 2010.

It’s probably the shop. I hit a deer last year on I40 in Oklahoma coming back from Utah, and took it to my local shop owned by the dealership $10000, in and out in 2 weeks. They did a great job.

    Doesn’t smell normal to me.

Sorry you’re dealing with this b/c it’s frustrating, but to concur with others already it appears that you have a shop issue, not a parts issue. Call the shop owner and see if he’ll level with you with what’s going on. If it’s one particular part holding up completion, be sure to keep us posted. Good luck.

I wouldn’t be too surprised since supply chain things can vary widely (at least it’s not Tesla wait times…) but insurance likely won’t accept available parts that aren’t Toyota factory new.

What year is your rig? If it's a current model with few miles the insurance contract might stipulate new parts, in which case they may be unobtainium. Customers, insureds, and shops have pushed insurance carriers really hard to use OEM, new, parts instead of like-kind-quality (used and aftermarket), so insurance companies have put conditions in their contracts that stipulate new OEM parts for newer vehicles (as a way to attract customers). This increases cost and repair time.

You may be a victim of getting what you/we all asked for. New parts go to the assembly line first.

Now, none of that may apply to your situation, and yes, it would be strange not to find used or aftermarket. Also, plastic can be repaired, so many bumpers are repairable, it's usually not cost effective because replacements are often plentiful (if using used parts) and inexpensive. If they aren't available, ask the tech to spend three or four hours on a repair. If the damage really is minimal, why not repair it?

Just curious who are "they" / "them".

Looks like per Thatbassguy things are still same now. My TRD ORP had a significant accident in 2021. Accident happened in Feb and dealership towed it to the bodyshop. I got a call end of March/early April that its ready to pick up.

On another note I didn't call the body shop on any of the accidents. I let them take their time to fix it. I'm sure insurance will be following up with the time line as insurance is paying to the rental vehicle. Bodyshop "might" find it annoying both owner and insurance calling about the same vehicle. Not sure.

All my accident repairs were good except the 4Runner repair where dealership body shop did a pathetic job resulting me complain to Toyota corp and end up getting a new 4Runner.

I'm going to say depends on the parts.

My Tundra took 183 days (yes I counted) from the day it went in until I picked it up. I know it wasn't the shop as the guy would keep me updated and even text me pics and let me know what they were waiting on.

    Was all OEM parts.

It's listed as Aftermarket , Aftermarket Certified and Recycled Part.

Nothing says OEM, The fog light is listed as a Recycled Part.

The most costly thing is the bumper.....which i assume needs to be painted?

Body shops RARELY use OEM. They only do it if you insist. Even then, they buy non OEM. It's cheaper and much faster.

Look at the work order when you finally get it, you'll see "LKQ" alllllllll over it. I use to work for that company and there biggest buyers are body shops. They make every single part for (almost) every single car. Body panels/parts & engines, transmissions, clutches & rear ends.

Call those places and just ask if its in stock.

Then you would know if the auto body shop is just sitting on it.

Those are not OEM parts and although they cost less, they're inferior quality. I deliver OEM parts to collision shops all day long. The shops hate aftermarket parts because they don't fit for crap. But insurance companies generally insist on them unless a smart consumer pushes back. And if you do push back, the first thing they'll say is that they use "CAPA certified" aftermarket parts. Want to guess who runs that organization? The insurance companies. So, they're basically saying that if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for you. Don't fall for that crap either. The shops I deliver to say the CAPA certified parts are exactly the same as non CAPA certified - junk.

As for OEM parts taking longer to get because the assembly plants get first priority, 5th gen T4R's are no longer being made, so that doesn't wash.

They just shut down production in Japan, so the US market now has a bunch of OEM parts available. Just doesn't wash.

normally i would care if the parts are not OEM but since it's just a plastic bumper...........You would probably have a hard time getting any insurance to pay OEM prices.

I bet the OEM bumper is costly it's a big piece of plastic!

A bumper cover is a very complex injection molded part and you do get what you pay for. Here's a personal story to prove it.

A few years ago, my son crashed my daily driver 2006 Scion (Toyota) xB while trying to miss a deer. The front bumper cover, LF fender and both left side doors needed to be replaced amongst other things. I requested OEM parts, but my insurance company pushed back. We negotiated back and forth and I came up with an OEM / junkyard fender and both doors in perfect shape, so they relented there. They insisted on the bumper cover and I said only if it fit perfectly.

Well, the shop painted the aftermarket bumper cover and tried to put it on the car. They knew right away that I wasn't going to buy the fit. So, they went back to my insurance company and got them to ok an OEM piece - which fit perfectly. In the name of saving money, the insurance company ended up paying to for two front bumper covers, plus paint. Yea, they saved a fortune.

The moral is that most people have no clue how bad the aftermarket stuff really is. (And don't even get me started on the junk primer they spray on top of the poorly stamped sheet metal parts - which won't last at all in the rust belt.) I've seen some truly appalling fits on sheet metal parts and bumper covers that look like they were molded for a completely different vehicle. But 95% of customers believe their insurance company when they say they fixed it "good as new." Get a few beers in your friendly local body shop manager and ask them what they really think about aftermarket crash parts.

I believe you after looking at the repair Estimate they list the toyota OEM part numbers but then after the insurance adjuster came out and gave a estimate it shows Aftermarket Certified part numbers and guess what the Aftermarket Certified bumper is $20 less than the OEM part.

    Insurance is such a con.

4runner bumper covers are cheap, front or rear. The face lift non limited/trd sport is around $300 from toyota and the pn 5211935920

Pull a twenty out of your wallet and hand it to the collision shop to get the better OEM bumper cover. It will be money well spent.

Stop calling the bodyshop and physically go to them. See what, if any progress has been made.
Try to have your Ins. Adjuster meet you there if possible.
Put eyes on it and talk to the BS owner and get them moving forward.

It's your money and your truck.

Drive it or tow it to a different shop.
