Looks like a great trip. How does it work with the Roundup? Do you decide what trails you want to do before setting out every morning?

You pick the routes/trails you want to do when they have enrollment which if I remember was in February. Originally I picked, Imogene Pass, Alpine Loop, and Black Bear pass but changed Black Bear to Animas Forks after my wife watched a YouTube video of a jeep rolling down the mountain, that was the end of that LOL. I'll probably sign up to run it alone next year.

Is a lift a requirement for the trails or are some of them doable with a stock heigh suspension and some armour?

It was either spur number 2 or 3 off Mt Herman Rd. The ruts are soooooo much deeper than pics make them out to be, and they get more fun every time it rains and washes out a little.

Stock would be pretty tough on most of these routes in the San Juans. On Imogene pass the guy in front of me in a Off Road 4R hit his rear hitch and bent one of the loops on the side right up in the process. When we stopped a little later for a quick break I asked him what he was running for a lift and he was at 2.5 inches. I am at 3" and didn't hit. Of course it didn't help that he came down off the obstacle too fast. Everyone in the round up was lifted at least 2 to 3 inches, it would be the one thing I would suggest besides a front skid plate.

I haven't done Imogene, but all of Alpine Loop (and Engineer Pass) is very doable stock height with no damage. I consider better tires a must, as you'll need the traction and there are loads of sharp rocks, but no lift was necessary. At least one poster on here mentioned that Imogene was easier than Engineer, in his opinion, but I think lifts are a bit overrated for most things.

When I did the Alpine Loop in a rental Jeep in 2000, my cousin did it in a stock Grand Cherokee on highway tires.

Near Estes Park, CO. Pole Hill Road in Roosevelt National Forest. Just an access road but gets to some awesome views.

Then went to Johnny Park Road nearby, which is far more interesting an off-road trail. Saw lots of sxs's, no other 4x4's. Not difficult, but very rocky. Didn't take any pics there. Only got halfway when I ran out of time.

Did you make it to the McGrew trail this summer? Post some pictures. I would have joined you if it wasn’t for having to move for my job.

    Cheers

@nova, I hate to admit it, but no. I let my forest service pass lapse without going. I sold the Wrangler and just got into the 4R and ended up using some time off to do something entirely different. Ended up with a sunburn though, so it was still a good time.

Clean ride and paint is looking wet. Did you do anything to the paint? Ceramic/PPF?

I have a seven-year ceramic coating, with the Expel wrap on the hood, front fenders, A-Pillar, etc. I also adjusted the photo a bit in Lightroom, but IRL the paint looks awesome! The ceramic coating is great, and it makes washing the 4Runner a lot easier.
