After 1,100 miles I finally popped the hood for the 1st time since purchase. I fully anticipated seeing the oil filter placement up top of the engine instead of just like my old 06 Tacoma 4.0 V6. I see the guys on the Tacoma forum bitching and moaning about the oil filter placement and paper filter and was expecting the same. Pleasantly surprised....correct yes?

Your Post is a little confusing but the filter is on the bottom of the motor and is a paper canister filter. Stock skid has to come off to access

The 4Runner filter is mildly annoying as it's a cartridge style filter. You need to clean and install a new O-ring on the filter housing every time, it adds an extra step and complicates things.

I miss my older vehicles where I'd spin the filter off and immediately spin the new one on.

Uses the same filter wrench as the 2016-2023 Tacoma 3.5L but a taller filter cartridge.

Don't really know what the question is here, but you have to buy a 4th gen 4R for that.

As often as I change the oil (personally), the cartridge filter doesn't bother me. I actually like having less trash to throw away, personally.

Had the bolded part of this post said I fully anticipated seeing the oil filter placement up top of the engine, just like my old 06 Tacoma 4.0 V6 it would have made sense.

I'm not quite sure what the pleasant surprise was.

This is the updated 1GR with dual VVT-i and the different oil filter style and position that's been around in the FJ and Runner since 2010. The Tacoma never got it so that's

Maybe @NeverTooLate71 didn't like the top-mounted filter, which is very dependent on the anti-drainback valve to avoid dry starts.

Is that the purpose of the top mount oil filter? To mitigate dry starts?

    No real reason besides packaging.

No. Top mount oil filter is more likely to cause dry starts if the anti-drainback valve in the filter leaks.

Can someone explain this dry start thing? I thought all starts are technically dry starts with any engine, if you're looking at the valve train or pistons (all the oil is in the oil pan, right?)

Second, was this ever an issue for these engines? Lots of 4g 4R and 2g Tacos out there, and this thread is the first place I've seen it mentioned.

A dry start is that second is takes to pressurize the oil system. The anti drainback valve prevents oil drainage from the filter back to the pan so pressurization takes less time.
