I have twin boys who just turned the legal age to start driving. My buddy has a dealership and took a recent trade on a 2010 four-runner with 301k miles on it. I told him to keep an eye out for something below $15k. He let us drive it for the weekend to see if it checks out. I know four-runners can go forever. This one is clean and seems to have been taken good care of. It drives great and passes all the basic checks. Are there any concerns with buying this vehicle with the number of miles driven? Is there anything specific I need to check on before returning it to the dealership? I own a 2016 tundra and love it. It has almost 300k miles on it, but I have owned it from new and know the history/maintenance on it. My buddy gave me a price of $7500 on the four-runner; the retail price online is $12,900. I feel like the price is good at $7500 just wondering if anyone has any thoughts? Carfax says two owners, no accidents.

Thanks in advance for any input!

    Oooh look, another mod.....

That does sound like a fair price, but what's the condition like? Any peeling paint, chipping? Any tears or stains in the seats? Any signs of rust? Any dents/dings? Do all the interior and exterior lights work? Any electrical gremlins at all? It probably has a sunroof, most Limited's do, (I think all?).......check for signs of water leaking into the cabin. If there's a leak you'll see mildew in the passenger front seat footwell area.

    This thread may help: https://www.4runners.com/threads/300k-mile-maintenance-question.37017/

When you inspect it, check the frame, suspension, etc. See if it needs an alignment. Find out when the last major service was done. Has it had a timing belt/chain recently? Were the fluids flushed/drained and topped off? Are the brake pads/calipers good with plenty of life left?

Oh, and post the link to it here if you can, or pictures. We wanna see this rig.

Thanks for the information. I'll go over it again today. Here are a few pics. There are rock chips and a few scratches on it. But I'm ok with that.

Look for rust. Everything else short of an engine can be replaced if it's worn off.
Rusted frame is a no go.
If no rust, look for maintenance records. Most important oil change intervals. Keep you expectations in check. It is 15 years old and has 300k. Things will break at that mileage Toyota or no Toyota.

That's a really good looking truck. Cosmetically, it looks great. I wouldn't be concerned with the rock chips either. It's a 14yr old vehicle, so it'll have some imperfections in it. Now, the main thing you have to worry about is the frame, the maintenance history and the suspension. I know Limited's have XReas 4whl/AWhl drive. I think they just 'wear out' after a certain amount of time or miles. See if it was serviced or replaced.

Overall, that looks like a pretty solid deal for $7,500. Sadly though, your 16yr old is probably going to pay between $2-3k a year in insurance!

I got under the vehicle after church. Here are some pics of the underside. maybe some surface rust but nothing heavy. Appreciate all the input. The cosmetic stuff doesn't bother me. They will bump into things anyway as they learn to drive.

That rust is nothing! Well, compared to people who live in the rust belt. It's all surface and the rest of the driveline components look pretty great. Buy it and let the kid enjoy it.

You have a leak. Right behind the idler . Make sure it's not the timing cover. Even that is not a problem as long as it's a few drops. If more, it' a very expensive repair. But that looks pretty new to me due to lack of any grime.

Looks like the power steering pump is leaking. How hard are those to swap out? Other than that it looks pretty good. Put it up on my father in laws lift.

Thanks for all your input above! Much appreciated. I went ahead and pulled the trigger and bought it. It needs new tires, cant stand the highway tread. Needs a good AT. I was wondering if a 1" lift or a 2" left to level it out would make a noticeable difference. Going up one size in tires so need to lift at least 1" I would think.

Looks like the previous owner has swapped the XREAS shocks to trusty basic Tokico ones.
