2003 4Runner shift gear assembly

Q2A here: Thanks for response to loose shift lever on 2003 4R.
Your response about spring loaded operation failing at pin and spring housing sounds like what happened.
Does anyone know a way to test a used shifting assembly housing?
I will be in the market for one.

Could just need a new bushing where the shifter cable connects?

I just replaced my entire assembly because I couldn’t shift over to 4, was $825 for reference. Fairly easy install though.

Did you use a used assembly for replacement or did you locate a new one.

I am concerned I will need replace my assembly with a used part and I am wondering if I can find one I can test gear shift lever moving through selected positions with acceptable “stiffness”.

 

I bought a new OEM assembly from Toyota. I checked eBay for used but all looked somewhat janky. I didn’t check local salvage yards, so you could try visiting one nearby. But ya I’m not sure how you’ll be able to test functionality on a used one, partially the reason I just bit the bullet and went new.

does yours shift through all the drive modes and gears but is just ‘sloppy’ or ‘loose’? If that’s the case YouTube 4th gen 4Runner shifter bushing replacement .

 

My son had that problem and replaced his with one from eBay. It's been 7 months and he's not had any problems. He reused some of the better parts from his old shift. I think he paid about $125, somewhere around there.

My trusted mechanic operated my 4r.
He indicated there was a spring may be broken that holds gear selector in 4th gear. All other operations work well. If I want to keep in 4th gear I need to do so manually. So I will do no repairs for now and see how it goes.
