Engine break in

Does anyone ever put so many miles on their new engine before towing anything? I have a 17ft aluminum bass boat didn’t know if I should break in the motor before towing additional weight.

 

Had someone break into my car once, never my engine with so many miles.

 

You can pull that boat day one. Just take it easy

 

How many miles do you have now? How many miles do you want to tow?

 

I could tow that boat behind my bicycle. You'll be fine. Just vary the RPMs if you're on a long highway slog.

yup, I’d be fine with towing. I wouldn’t go cross country, but most trips would be fine.

 

Vaguely follow the other instructions for the remainder of the first 1000 miles and have fun.

Michelin prefers a few hundred miles of taking it easy on new tires for break-in but I ended up heading off-road after something like 100-200, oops.

We’ll see if I suffer the consequences.

 

My opinion may not be popular, but I know many farmers and contractors etc. who put their vehicles to work the day they got them. They still rack up hundred of thousands of miles with no issues. Their logic is to break in the vehicle how it is going to be used.

 

Many of the Cat and John Deere mechanics that I used to work with while I operated heavy equipment pretty much told us to at least take it easy for the first few hours of "break-in". But they also stressed that routine maintenance is the key factor in dependability.

Before I hit 300 miles in my 4R, I was towing my small utility trailer to the big box stores for building supplies.

 

Everyone worried about break in should be more worried about keeping up with regular maintenance instead.

Because majority of engine issues is going to be from lack of maintenance.

I've never ever changed oil before 5K on all my new vehicles and 0 have had engine issues.

Some just too paranoid.

Because one is dumb and one is not.

One extra oil change isn't dumb, neither is asking questions.

 

Which one is not dumb and for what reasons?

 

It's not just the engine, it's everything in your truck that needs some time to settle in. Give it 500 to 1000 miles. Even your lift kit acts funny in the first few hundred miles

 

I did two breakin oil changes, at 600 and at 2500. And two gear oil changes when I regeared, at 500 and at 5,000. Oil is cheap, protect your parts, parts that cost you a ton of money

 

Just received some good stuff from Walmart, zero delivery fee, $29 for 5 quarts. Don't be such cheap fucks, put good stuff in your motor. You can get quality oil and filter for less than half a tank of gas, so do frequent oil changes.
I use this oil on my Grand Cherokee as well. I was using TGMO but it's way too expensive.
