Calm down. There are good mechanics and bad mechanics. A certified master tech is just a parts swapper with extra training. Plenty of mechanics at independent shops are just as experienced. Not to mention good mechanics (and master techs) move into independent shops as the pay is generally better.

 

brakes for $1k? I wouldn’t do it. I’d only replace rotors if they have an actual issue and have no more service life in them.

what’s acr refresh for $210! I wouldn’t do it and wouldn’t want to care to know what it is.

the rest seems fine but overpriced by at least 30%.

 

I am calm!
And I am not looking for an Independent mechanic with experience. I am looking for an independent mechanic with experience working on a 4runner in specific and Toyotas in general. Both things that a Toyota master tech fulfills.
If it's a tire change, I don't bother, DT can do that. But if it's my timing chain, I am not letting an independent garage near it unless I know for a fact they work on a Toyota. Now if it's a former Toyota master tech that has started his own garage or works somewhere, I would gladly take it there.

 

You know there are toyota specialized or even specific independent shops right? There are for all manufacturers.

 

I am not sure what you trying to say, but it's a flogging dead horse point by now and whatever floats anyone's boat when it comes to service is alright.

 

4runners are the simplest of the simple. Very easy to work on. You don't need a master mechanic. Just a mechanic/shop you can trust.

 

Dealers are always WAY higher than reasonable and fair prices, and an awful lot of them are dishonest crooks (like mine, where I will never have them do anything again).

My older son inherited an older but low mile Camry from his grandmother recently (a spare car for him and family), he told me he had taken it to the dealer and spent thousands, I told him ADAMANTLY NEVER to a dealer (at least if you are out of warranty) for anything, find a solid independent instead, save half or so!!!!

 

And even then they make mistakes. The CarCareNut just posted a YT Video of a 5th Gen that had a hydro locked engine. Evidentially the Dealership that had just done plugs and didn’t connect the vacuum hose that runs from the air intake to the back of the engine, causing fuel enrichment so bad that one cylinder was filled with fuel. (I think I said all that correct). The engine survived though. He did mention that if you do allot of like 15 sec trips (like shuffling cars around in the driveway) especially in extreme weather that it could cause this condition.

My point is mistakes happen and this one hose almost grenaded this bullet proof engine.
