Hello. I'm proud to have 304K miles on my 2005 4Runner. I change my oil & filters. Have had to replace the brakes, and the air induction pump. Little other maintenance. Unfortunately I did not replace the dash. It finally cracked after the recall was no longer available. Came to this forum looking for solutions to the squirrel nest in the cabin air filter housing. Yesterday I removed six tiny newborn squirrels. Ugh. I replaced the filter. Henceforth I will use Lemon Pledge and peppermint oil to discourage the squirrel's return.

Welcome and congrats on the mileage.
The ongoing rodent problem seems to have many solutions that might or might not work according to the prevailing answers from other victims.I use peppermint spray and it seems to work depending upon the critter you are looking to discourage. It seems to work on mice which are kind of squirrelly.

    Welcome to the forum!

You need to put a screen over the fresh air intake hole under the cowl/hood to keep rodents out of the cabin filter.

The following link is for a 5th Gen but it gives you the idea of how to go about doing this.

4th & 5th Gens have cabin filters which is the place mentioned of the "nesting" in this topic, 3rd Gens do not have a cabin filter.

That being said rodents nest and chew wires in all vehicles, usually under the hood, where rodents are an issue.

Yep, they have two liters. One in late winter and one in mid summer.
